The kinds of DMV offices

A customer service center is the DMV's own full service office: licenses, ID cards, REAL ID, driver privilege cards, titles, registration, plates, records and tests, with an appointment, a same day reservation or a walk in.

A DMV Select is a local government or business the DMV authorizes for vehicle transactions only, registration renewals, titles, plates and placards among them; it issues no license or ID and processes no mechanic or storage lien title, as the DMV's DMV Select page and the DMV Select guide explain.

The DMV also sends mobile offices to places far from a center, on a schedule it publishes.

Hours patterns

Of the 133 DMV offices, 131 have published hours; 58 open on Saturday and 129 open on Monday.

The Virginia week at a customer service center is Monday to Friday 8 am to 5 pm, and most centers add Saturday 8 am to noon; a DMV Select keeps the hours its operator sets, which the DMV quotes. Each office page carries the DMV's own day table.

Appointments and walk-ins

The DMV's appointments page offers an appointment, a same day reservation or a walk in at any customer service center; a CDL skills test is booked ahead and a missed one the examiner was not told about costs $50.
