Virginia DMV charges depend on the credential term, vehicle, requested service, and any record requirements. Use the current fee schedule with the transaction instructions to estimate the complete amount.

Start with the current transaction and fee schedule
The DMV 201 fee schedule revised August 10, 2026 is the starting point for this overview, reviewed October 21, 2026. A listed base fee may be only one component of the amount due. Identify whether the application is original issuance, renewal, replacement, an added classification, or restoration after suspension. Those transactions can produce different totals for the same person or vehicle even when completed at the same office.
Separate state credential charges from taxes, local charges, insurance premiums, and private training or testing expenses. A receipt from a school or interlock provider does not necessarily include DMV's charges. Likewise, a vehicle dealer may collect several amounts together that have different legal purposes. Ask for an itemized estimate and compare each line with the responsible program so a low advertised service price is not mistaken for the entire cost of becoming licensed or registering a vehicle.
Ordinary licenses, permits, and identification
An ordinary Virginia driver's license costs $4 per year, with a $20 minimum; the normal eight-year credential is $32. The renewal page says renewal costs the same as the applicable licensing fee. Drivers age 75 or older receive five-year licenses, so the ordinary annual rate produces $20 for that term. A shorter credential or a special classification should be priced using its actual validity rather than an assumed eight years.
The combined ordinary learner's permit and license adds a $3 permit charge to the license's annual amount. A driver privilege card is listed at $50, or $53 with the combined learner's permit. The fee chart lists a replacement driver's license at $20 and an ordinary replacement learner's permit at $2. Determine whether a change requires replacing the physical card before paying; some record updates can be made without immediately purchasing a newly printed credential.
REAL ID adds a one-time $10 fee to the cost of the underlying license or identification card being requested. It is not a substitute for that base charge. The ordinary photo ID rate is $2 per year, with a $10 minimum and $16 maximum in the schedule; an identification privilege card is $25. Choose the credential that matches eligibility and intended use, and complete the supporting document requirements before paying for an application that cannot yet be issued.
Commercial and motorcycle charges
The commercial licensing instructions describe an ordinary eight-year CDL without endorsements as $64. DMV 201 lists the commercial rate at $8 per year with a $20 minimum, a $3 commercial learner's permit, and commercial endorsements at $1 per year. The license term and requested additions determine the final charge. Commercial training, a test vehicle rental, and employer-required screening are additional expenses outside that base licensing calculation.
The hazardous materials security assessment costs $83 for the ordinary fingerprint-based process and is nonrefundable. A valid, verifiable TWIC can qualify for the $41 comparability option under DMV's conditions, with validity tied to that credential. These screening payments are separate from the annual endorsement charge. Confirm eligibility and remaining TWIC validity before selecting the reduced-fee route, especially when the credential is approaching expiration.
Virginia's CDL skills-test instructions impose a $50 missed-appointment charge when the examiner was not notified. It must be paid within 31 days; nonpayment adds $10 and blocks DMV transactions. Budgeting should therefore include cancellation planning when training vehicles or instructors are scheduled separately. Prompt notice to the examiner can prevent a missed appointment from becoming an additional administrative debt.
For motorcycles, the classification costs $2 per year and the learner's permit costs $3. DMV's motorcycle issuance instructions require the replacement-license charge plus the classification fee for remaining validity when adding the designation. The motorcycle-only license is $6 per year and normally lasts eight years. Rider training provider charges are separate, so compare the full training-and-issuance cost rather than only the permit amount.
Vehicle title, registration, and tax
The schedule lists $15 for an original title, substitute title, replacement title without changes, and supplemental lien title. Registration depends on the vehicle and weight category. Ordinary passenger vehicles at 4,000 pounds or less have a listed annual base of $30.75, while those above 4,000 through 6,500 pounds are $35.75. Review the registration instructions for the vehicle's actual category, term, and locality before treating those amounts as an all-inclusive renewal quote.
Other listed annual registration bases include $24.75 for a motorcycle, $18.25 for a moped, and $21.75 for an autocycle. A registration transfer is $2, a replacement decal is $1, and a replacement registration card is $2 through paid channels but free online. The schedule also lists a $10 late fee. A special plate, local registration program, emissions-related charge, or highway use fee can change the total, so consult the current renewal notice or official calculation for the specific vehicle.
The motor vehicle sales and use tax is generally 4.15 percent of the applicable gross sales price, with a $75 minimum. DMV's calculation includes the dealer processing fee and does not deduct a trade-in credit from the taxable gross price. Qualifying exemptions require the appropriate evidence. A title fee is therefore a separate item from the tax due when ownership changes, and paying one does not satisfy the other.
Registration figures can include an additional $2 in the localities identified in DMV 201 for the emissions program, as well as applicable local registration charges. The schedule lists an electric-vehicle highway use fee of $135.63, while other eligible vehicles can have their own highway use calculation. Inspection-station charges and local personal property taxes have separate billing rules. Use the official transaction total to reconcile these components instead of multiplying a single base registration rate by the requested years.
Records, recognition, and disability services
A driver or vehicle transcript costs $8 online or $9 through other channels. Record certification adds $5. The current CRD 93 request form lists supporting documents at $3 per page, a police crash report at $8, and a motor carrier overweight record at $8. Choose the exact product and certification needed, because a personal driving transcript and a crash report answer different questions.
Virginia's current disability application page states that temporary and permanent parking placards for citizens are free. Do not use an older $5 placard estimate after the July 2026 change. Eligibility and medical certification still apply. The Veteran indicator also has no additional charge, although the normal fee for the credential being issued or replaced remains due. Free recognition or placard services do not imply that every related vehicle transaction is free.
