What Florida lets you finish online

Florida runs its driver and vehicle work through the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, FLHSMV, and through the 67 county tax collectors who act for it at the counter. A renewal, a replacement credential, an address change and a registration renewal are all built to be done without a visit.

The things that still need a counter are the ones that need a document checked in person: a first Florida credential, a REAL ID upgrade for someone whose papers are not yet on file, a title transfer, a driving test. Which group your transaction falls into is the first thing to settle, because it decides whether you need an appointment at all.

Start with the 266 service centers if you need the counter, and with the guides below if you do not.

Driver licenses and ID cards

A Florida Class E license is the ordinary car license, and FLHSMV sets its original and renewal fee at $48.00 on its fee schedule, read October 17, 2026. An identification card, whether original, renewal or replacement, is $25.00.

A replacement license costs $25.00, a late renewal adds $15.00, and each endorsement is $7.00. Failing a test is not free either: FLHSMV charges $10.00 for a knowledge retest and $20.00 for a skills retest.

Add $6.25 if the credential is issued in a tax collector office, which is where 61 of the 266 Florida service centers sit. A veteran who has shown proof of service does not pay it.

Vehicle registration, titles and plates

Florida charges a base registration tax by vehicle weight. A car under 2,500 pounds is $14.50, 2,500 to 3,499 pounds is $22.50, and 3,500 pounds or more is $32.50. A motorcycle is $10.00 and a moped $5.00. Those are the base taxes only, before the other statutory charges.

The figure that surprises people is the $225.00 initial registration fee, which Florida charges the first time a vehicle is registered in the state to an owner who has no plate to move across. A plate itself is $28.00.

On the title side FLHSMV lists $77.25 for an original title on a new vehicle, $85.25 for an original on a used one, $75.25 for a transfer or duplicate and $74.25 to record a lien alone. A printed paper title adds $2.50, a Fast Title is $10.00, and a late title application carries $20.00.

Service centers, hours and holidays

FLHSMV lists 266 service centers on the locations pages of 66 counties, read October 16, 2026. Miami-Dade County has the most, with 37.

Hours are set by whoever runs the office, so they are not uniform across the state. Of the 266 centers, 146 publish a plain weekday opening time and 120 publish something else: separate driver license and motor vehicle counters, a different Wednesday, or Saturday opening.

State run centers close on the nine Florida state holidays the Department of Management Services publishes. The dates for 2026 and the full list of centers are on the Florida service center page.
