Florida's order for changing a name

The FLHSMV name and address instructions say to change the name with the Social Security Administration first, allow 24 to 48 hours, and then update the Florida driver license or ID in person. After that, update the vehicle title and registration records. An online address transaction does not replace the office requirement for a name change.

Florida's document guidance explains how to connect a birth name to a current name after marriage, divorce or a court order. When several changes occurred, the last document alone is sufficient only if it shows both the birth name and the current name. Otherwise bring the documents that establish the intervening changes.

The U.S. citizen checklist identifies an exception: a valid U.S. passport already showing the current name eliminates the need for additional name change documents. The name associated with the Social Security number must still match the Florida credential being requested.

Immigration and Canadian name documents

For nonimmigrants, FLHSMV's nonimmigrant checklist says a legal name change must also appear on USCIS documents. A marriage or divorce document does not, by itself, satisfy that instruction to update the immigration document.

The immigrant checklist separately identifies the legal presence documents and requires the Social Security name to match the requested Florida card. Use the checklist for the customer's actual status; the accepted primary documents differ.

For Canadian applicants, the Canadian checklist says to change the name on the Canadian driver license and/or passport before seeking the Florida name change. The same page identifies an original valid Canadian passport as primary identification.

Changing a Florida address online or in an office

FLHSMV permits address changes through MyDMV Portal or at an office. Its portal description lists residential and mailing address updates as an available function. Review both addresses when they differ.

The Motor Vehicle Express Renewal page explicitly excludes address modifications. An express registration renewal therefore is not the place to correct the address. Use the full portal transaction or office service.

For an office visit, Florida's document lists call for two different proofs of Florida residential address. A current driver license or ID card cannot be used as residential address proof. The citizen address list includes a residential rental or lease agreement, Florida vehicle registration or title, and a utility bill dated within the last 60 days. That age limit applies to the utility bill example; the page attaches date requirements to particular document categories rather than one universal expiration rule.

When the household documents are in someone else's name

The Certification of Address, HSMV 71120, is for a Class E license or ID applicant who cannot provide two approved Florida address documents in their own name. The applicant and the person certifying the address complete their respective portions, with supporting documents from the person whose name appears on the address proofs.

FLHSMV's citizen instructions say the person the applicant lives with must either attend the issuance office or sign the address certification before a notary. That route is not available for commercial licensing: the same checklist requires CLP and CDL applicants to present address documents in their own name and prohibits use of HSMV 71120 for those credentials.

The full primary identification and Social Security document choices remain on the Florida REAL ID guide.

What updates automatically on a Florida title

The name and address page says a driver record update automatically changes the electronic title record. A paper title still displays the old information until a new title is requested. FLHSMV permits the existing paper to retain that information because its ownership record has been updated; a lienholder may also restrict printing another title.

FLHSMV separately requires issuance of a registration showing the new information. The automatic electronic title update is therefore not a statement that every printed vehicle document has been replaced.

A registration form reference that needs clarification

FLHSMV's name and address page directs registration updates to HSMV 82101. However, Form 82101 itself is an application for a duplicate or lost in transit title, or a duplicate title with transfer. Its instructions describe title replacement transactions, not an ordinary corrected registration. The agency's TL 05 title procedure likewise assigns it to duplicate and lost in transit titles.

Those official instructions do not align. Ask the processing office which registration correction transaction it needs instead of applying for a duplicate title solely because that form number appears on the name and address page. Title replacement details belong on the Florida title guide.

Credential fees checked October 16, 2026

The FLHSMV fee schedule lists a replacement license or ID card at $25. An additional $6.25 tax collector service fee may apply. FLHSMV's online replacement instructions add a $2 processing charge for a portal replacement. These published amounts were checked October 16, 2026; neither page identifies a new effective date for these amounts.

The ordinary online replacement total is consequently $27, while a $25 replacement with the tax collector charge totals $31.25. Those are credential totals, not combined prices for replacing a license, title and registration. See the Florida fees guide for other transactions.
