When to renew a Florida license

FLHSMV's renewal instructions allow driver license renewal up to 18 months before expiration. The date printed on the credential identifies when it expires.

For Class E licenses held by citizens and immigrants, the agency's licensing FAQ gives an eight year term below age 80 and a six year term beginning at 80. Nonimmigrant credentials follow the authorized period of stay, capped at one year, rather than that ordinary eight year schedule. Documentation for those credentials belongs on the Florida limited term license guide.

Florida's published ID card renewal windows conflict. The main renewal page's opening instructions say 12 months early for ID cards, while its closing summary says 18 months for both licenses and ID cards. The driver license and ID overview also says 18 months. Those statements do not establish one consistent advance window for an ID card. Check the renewal availability for the actual card through MyDMV Portal or a service center.

Completing an online renewal

Use MyDMV Portal. Florida offers this convenience renewal every other renewal period, and FLHSMV must verify the customer's Social Security number. An unsuccessful Social Security verification requires follow up with the Social Security Administration.

The account verification page asks individuals to enter their name and birth date as they appear in the department's records, identifying and contact information, and an additional record identifier. Its listed identifiers include the driver license number and, for customers with other qualifying Florida records, a plate, title, parking permit or vessel number.

Online customers should receive the credential within two to three weeks. The renewal instructions describe an emailed receipt option on the payment confirmation page: choose yes, enter the email address and send the confirmation.

The separately labeled Motor Vehicle Express Renewal handles registration and parking permit renewals. It is not the driver license renewal transaction.

Who needs office service

The renewal page directs customers to an office after an online convenience renewal, when their credential is not REAL ID compliant, or when it says TEMPORARY. Photo changes, name changes, designation changes and court ordered updates also require office handling.

Commercial license guidance is inconsistent: that page says CDL holders must go in, but FLHSMV's portal service inventory lists CDL Renewal online. These statements should not be turned into a promise that every CDL is eligible. Check the transaction offered for the individual commercial record. Medical certification and endorsement requirements remain on the Florida CDL guide.

Florida's document instructions distinguish customers who have already established identity from those who need to provide original supporting documents. If a name or address has changed, follow the applicable documentation requirements. The complete accepted document lists belong on the Florida REAL ID guide.

Renewal at age 80 and older

The older driver renewal page confirms the six year Class E term beginning at age 80 and says eligible customers may renew online. It describes vision testing for those unable to renew online.

The agency's separate vision standards page uses broader language, saying drivers over 80 must submit the mature driver vision form or test at a driver license office. Because the pages describe the requirement differently, online eligibility should not be treated as proof that no vision documentation is needed.

The Mature Driver Vision Test form, HSMV 72119, expires one year after the examination date. The service center vision test has no additional charge according to the older driver renewal page, checked October 16, 2026. The detailed examination and referral rules are on the Florida senior driver guide.

Renewal fees checked October 16, 2026

FLHSMV's fee answers list Class E renewal at $48. With a motorcycle endorsement, renewal is $48 plus $7. The same page lists ID renewal at $25 and CDL renewal at $75. Those published figures were checked October 16, 2026; the page does not give a new effective date for them.

The state fee schedule, checked the same day, lists a possible $6.25 tax collector service fee and a $15 late fee. Additional endorsements or other required transactions can change the total.

For an ordinary online Class E renewal, the $48 state charge plus the published $2 online processing charge totals $50. Florida's online transaction notice says the convenience fee is nonrefundable and an order cannot be canceled after submission. The online charge and total were checked October 16, 2026.

Military customers temporarily outside Florida

FLHSMV publishes a separate Class E military extension application for qualifying service members and immediate family residing with them outside Florida. It requires the military affidavit/application and current orders. The extension is a distinct process with its own termination conditions, not an ordinary online renewal. See the Florida military guide for those conditions and submission options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I renew a Florida driver license online every time?
FLHSMV describes online convenience renewal as available every other renewal period, subject to eligibility.

Is a Florida ID card eligible for renewal 18 months early?
FLHSMV publishes conflicting 12 month and 18 month statements for ID cards. Check the transaction available for your card rather than relying on either statement as a universal rule.

Does every Florida Class E renewal last eight years?
No. The ordinary term becomes six years at age 80, and nonimmigrant credentials have separate limits.

Can I use Motor Vehicle Express Renewal for my driver license?
No. That service identifies registrations and parking permits as its renewal products. Use the driver license transaction in MyDMV Portal.

How much is an ordinary online Class E renewal?
As checked October 16, 2026, the published $48 renewal fee plus the $2 online charge totals $50, before any additional required transaction.

Does an online renewal remove the vision requirement for older drivers?
Do not infer that from online eligibility. FLHSMV's older driver and vision standards pages describe the requirement differently; check the vision documentation required for your renewal.
