Reviewed and updated October 22, 2026 by the SearchSystems.net editorial team. Every fact on this page was read that day from the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles' own pages and its office directory and, where named, the Delaware Code and the state's news releases, and the official page each fact came from is linked where it appears.

Treat the plate as part of a vehicle record

A Delaware tag represents a particular registration and assigned number. Start with the vehicle titling instructions when purchasing or bringing a vehicle into Delaware because a plate choice does not replace proof of ownership. The owner must satisfy the title, insurance, inspection, and registration requirements before the vehicle can lawfully use the issued credentials.

Read the Delaware plate statutes for the rules governing classification and display. Vehicle weight and type can affect which plate class is available, including commercial, farm, recreational, motorcycle, and moped categories. Do not choose a class solely for appearance. Changing the vehicle's actual use or weight may require a corresponding change to its registration and plate assignment.

Mount the assigned plate correctly

Ordinary Delaware passenger vehicles display their assigned number plate at the rear. The law makes a different placement rule for truck tractors, so a commercial operator should check the applicable vehicle configuration. Secure the plate so it does not swing, keep it clearly visible, and maintain the required mounting height. A plate lying behind the rear window is not equivalent to the prescribed installation.

Frames must leave every required item readable, including the expiration sticker. Tinted covers and materials obscuring the plate are prohibited, and the statute separately addresses devices intended to defeat imaging. Check the plate after installing a bike carrier or other rear accessory. Its number and validation should remain usable for identification rather than becoming hidden by equipment.

Compare background and organizational designs

The specialty-plate directory divides Delaware offerings into background and organizational plates. Background designs support specified causes and generally display the vehicle's assigned registration number. Organizational plates depend on membership or other eligibility and can have numbering controlled by the organization. These two design systems have different restrictions and cannot simply be combined into a custom hybrid.

Use the individual listing in the background-plate catalog to check the application channel, eligible vehicle, and charge. Some designs have a one-time purchase amount, while others also carry an annual renewal charge. For example, the catalog identifies continuing charges for certain bicycle, conservation, and child-protection designs. Read the chosen listing rather than assuming every background costs the same.

For organizational plates, contact the sponsoring group, school, or military organization as directed. DMV lists a $10 administrative amount for each organizational plate, and the organization may impose its own additional charge. Confirm continuing membership requirements and vehicle eligibility before ordering. A donation alone may not satisfy the qualifications for a plate restricted to members or a particular service group.

Check the current vanity-plate notice

The current vanity-plate notice states that DMV is not issuing new vanity plates following the federal court decision dated May 14, 2024. It separately allows renewal of vanity plates issued before that decision. An old search or reservation page describing how to select letters should not be treated as proof that new orders are presently being accepted.

Owners of existing vanity plates should review the current fee schedule when renewing; it lists a $40 annual vanity charge in addition to ordinary registration charges. Check current agency instructions before any transfer or replacement involving the vanity credential. A provision with a future effective date is not authority to use a procedure that has not yet taken effect.

Order an authorized black-and-white reproduction

The DMV black-and-white plate page identifies the Delaware Historic Plate Company as the authorized manufacturer. Qualifying plates already registered to a vehicle may also be ordered at a DMV location. Buying a decorative replica from an unrelated vendor can produce an unauthorized plate even when its colors and lettering resemble a lawful historic reproduction.

Read the manufacturer's DMV-referenced eligibility restrictions for the number and material. For example, numbers-only porcelain plates are limited to 86,999 or below, while the listed numbers-only stainless-steel limit is 200,000. Prefix categories have different limits, and many plate classes are excluded. The order reproduces a number already assigned to your vehicle; it does not let you invent a new number.

The specialty-plate FAQ instructs owners receiving a background or black-and-white plate to keep the blue-and-gold version in the vehicle for verification if needed. Follow that specific instruction rather than treating every removed plate as something to destroy. It differs from returning a plate during an insurance cancellation or surrender of a registration.

Handle disability credentials through their own application

An ADA plate or placard requires the applicable eligibility and certification. The permanent-disability renewal process uses the individual's continuing-disability statement without requiring a new medical signature, while an initial qualifying application generally needs the prescribed licensed professional's certification. Select the correct initial or renewal application instead of assuming the plate can be purchased as a decorative specialty.

Accessible parking use also depends on the eligible person being the driver or passenger when the vehicle occupies the space. A relative borrowing the vehicle alone does not gain that privilege simply because its plate bears the symbol. Keep the plate renewal and underlying vehicle registration current, and check the specific instructions if household circumstances or the vehicle change.

Reserve a number before disposing of its vehicle

The tag-retention procedure allows a number to be held or moved through DMV's records. Bring the title and required owner participation, and arrange a lienholder title request when necessary. An AND ownership requires both owners' participation as specified, while AND/OR permits the stated alternative. Proof of Delaware insurance is required when the transaction retags a vehicle or moves the number to another one.

A number placed in retention without a vehicle must be attached before the retained registration expires. If a number remains assigned to a vehicle the owner keeps, DMV describes a separate period extending up to one year after expiration. Selling the vehicle without arranging the necessary retention risks losing the number. Put the actual deadline on a calendar after the retention transaction is completed.

Review online retention eligibility and replacement needs

The online Sold Out of State procedure is available for specified out-of-state sales and related situations. It requires an active tag expiration and excludes certain suspensions, vehicle classes, and other records. Retain the resulting slip and give it to the dealer or DMV with the next vehicle's documents so the intended number is assigned correctly.

For a damaged or missing plate, use the duplicate-plate instructions and provide insurance and the identifying registration information. If theft is involved, follow the stolen-plate guidance and report it to police. DMV recommends considering a different number because the stolen one may continue to appear on another vehicle. Ask what temporary credential will cover the wait for the replacement.

Maintain the registration behind the plate

Changing a design or ordering replacement metal does not extend the registration expiration. The underlying vehicle still needs its applicable inspection, insurance, and renewal payment. Keep specialty-order receipts and use the official order-status tool when available, but continue to follow the expiration and display instructions for whichever credential is currently authorized.

If insurance will be canceled, the insurance and surrender FAQ requires the active plate to be surrendered first. If the vehicle is moved and registered elsewhere, follow the out-of-state move instructions. Finish the record change through DMV and preserve confirmation. A plate removed from the bumper but left in a drawer can still be associated with an active Delaware registration.
