Choose the record that answers your question

A Delaware driving record can help you review convictions, license status, and the information a prospective employer or insurer may ask you to provide. The DMV driving-record service offers three-year, five-year, and full histories. Ask the organization requesting the document which period it needs and how recently the record must have been issued. A longer history does not automatically satisfy a request for a particular format or certification date, and buying the wrong version may mean paying for another order.

The driving and vehicle records page distinguishes your driver history from a vehicle ownership or registration record. A collision report is another separate document, obtained from the investigating police agency. Write down the purpose of the request before choosing a service, especially when an insurance claim, employment screening, and license reinstatement are happening together. This prevents a certified driving history from being mistaken for proof of a specific crash, a current insurance policy, or permission to drive.

Order your own certified history online

Use the official Delaware online services entry point and your personal MyDMV account. The account instructions explain the identifying information needed to establish access, including your Delaware credential details and other information used to match the state record. Use your own account for your own record. Do not log in as a spouse, adult child, employee, or friend merely because you have their license number and consent to help with paperwork.

The online driving-record FAQ says the electronic record is certified and can be downloaded as a PDF. Select the desired history period before paying, then save the file immediately to a location you can find again. The purchased record remains available for 90 days, but reopening it does not refresh its contents. It represents the record on the purchase date. If a court disposition posts later or an employer asks for a newer issue date, obtain an updated record through the appropriate service.

Understand the fee and the mail alternative

The current DMV fee schedule lists a $25 driving-record charge. Selecting a full history and later deciding you need a three-year version can require a separate purchase; the online service does not turn one purchase into unlimited versions. Review the name, period, and destination requirements before authorizing payment. If the transaction fails to display a receipt, check the account's purchase history and contact DMV before submitting the same order repeatedly.

For mail requests, use Form MV703, Personal Information Release. Its March 2025 instructions expressly let an individual request a three-year, five-year, or complete driving history by writing the requested period across the top of the form. Complete the requester and record-holder information, have the signature notarized with the required seal or stamp, and include a $25 check or money order payable to DMV. Send driving-record requests to Division of Motor Vehicles, ATTN: Driver License Admin, PO Box 698, Dover, DE 19903. Keep a copy of the completed request and payment details.

Visit an office when the online route does not fit

An in-person request is useful when account access fails, the record cannot be matched, or you need staff to identify the correct record type. Check DMV office hours and contacts before traveling, and bring identification plus any request letter from the employer, court, or insurer. The release form provides for signing before DMV staff instead of submitting a mailed notarized signature. An office visit still requires the appropriate release information and payment; it does not bypass restrictions on another person's data.

Commercial drivers need special care with the purpose of the request. DMV's online FAQ says online driving-record requests cannot be processed for CDL medical-certification requirements. An employer checking medical status should contact DMV about the correct channel and record product instead of assuming the personal online PDF contains everything federal rules require. Your own annual review can be useful, but it does not substitute for an employer's separate qualification checks or cure missing medical information.

Request another person's record lawfully

Delaware's motor vehicle information-release policy protects identifying information such as addresses, license numbers, and medical or disability data. Under Title 21, section 305, release requires consent or a qualifying statutory purpose, together with the required identity and sworn statements. Some permitted disclosures can occur without individual notice. A general interest in a neighbor's driving, a family relationship, or possession of someone's plate number is not a substitute for the applicable authorization.

Businesses should follow the company instructions attached to MV703, including the appropriate statutory category or consent, completed notarized form, and a signed letter on business letterhead. Insurers, courts, investigators, and employers checking commercial-driver information may have different permitted purposes. State precisely what information is needed and why. Do not choose a category simply to get past a form field, and do not redistribute the received information for a purpose outside the authorization supporting the request.

Read points and license status separately

The number printed beside a conviction is not always the current total used for driver-improvement action. Delaware's point system counts points at full value for the first 12 months from the violation and at half value for the next 12 months. The driver-improvement regulation explains the calculation and resulting sanctions. An older entry can remain in the history after its calculated point contribution changes. A record with fewer current points therefore is not necessarily a record with fewer convictions.

An approved defensive-driving course may affect qualifying future point calculations, but it does not erase existing convictions. Likewise, paying a traffic fine does not itself remove an entry or clear every DMV restriction. Use the Delaware Courts traffic guidance to understand the court's role, and the DMV suspension information to identify agency requirements. If the record still shows a restriction after you believe you completed it, obtain confirmation from the responsible office before resuming driving.

Correct the source of an error

Compare the purchased history with your license, court documents, course certificates, and reinstatement correspondence. For an incorrect conviction or disposition, contact the court that supplied the entry and ask what correction must be transmitted to DMV. For a mismatched personal record or an apparent posting problem, contact Driver License Administration with the record date and identifying details through official channels. Preserve the original PDF so the disputed entry can be located precisely.

If a recipient rejects the record, ask for its precise reason before repurchasing. A document can be accurate yet fail an organization's requirement for a particular history period, recent issue date, or delivery channel. Clarifying that requirement gives DMV staff a concrete question and helps avoid another order that produces the same unsuitable document.

A move or name change also requires the separate DMV record-update process; annotating a downloaded history cannot change the state database. Medical restrictions must be resolved through Medical Review, rather than removed by a records clerk on request. Keep the correction confirmation, allow the originating agency to transmit it, and order a fresh history when you need evidence of the corrected result. Send only the requested document to the recipient, using a secure method appropriate for the personal information it contains.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Delaware driving record cost?
DMV lists a $25 charge. Choose the required three-year, five-year, or full history before purchasing to avoid paying for a second version.

Is a MyDMV driving record certified?
The official online FAQ describes the downloadable record as certified. Confirm that the organization requesting it accepts the chosen history period and issue date.

Can I order a full Delaware history through the mail?
The March 2025 MV703 instructions permit owners to specify a three-year, five-year, or complete history at the top of the form. Follow its notarization and payment directions.

How long can I retrieve my purchased online record?
The PDF is available for 90 days after purchase. It remains a snapshot of the purchase date, so later downloads do not add newly posted events.

Does a defensive-driving class delete convictions from the record?
Course completion does not erase convictions. Any available three-point credit is applied under DMV rules to qualifying future calculations.

Can an employer use my online PDF for CDL medical-certification requirements?
DMV states that online driving-record requests cannot be processed for that purpose. Ask DMV which request channel and record type meet the employer’s needs.
