Identify every Delaware record affected by the change

A move or legal name change can affect a driver license, identification card, vehicle registration, and title. The Delaware driver-record instructions require notification within 30 days after the relevant change, while vehicle guidance also describes the one-month reporting obligation. Begin by listing the credentials and vehicles held in the affected name. One successful transaction should not be assumed to update every record automatically, especially when several vehicles or co-owners are involved. Compare the confirmation for each transaction with the list of affected records, and contact DMV if a vehicle or credential remains associated with the former information.

Distinguish a new physical residence from a new mailing destination. DMV needs the actual residence for its records even when correspondence goes elsewhere. A legal name change also differs from correcting a typographical mistake or choosing a preferred nickname. Explain which event occurred so the agency can identify the necessary evidence. If a recent move made another state the permanent home, review that state's transfer requirements rather than preserving Delaware residency inaccurately.

Update Social Security before changing the DMV name

For a legal name change, DMV instructs customers to update Social Security first and allow 72 hours for the information to become available before visiting the Division. The name-change documentation FAQ also explains the matching requirement. Schedule the steps so the DMV deadline can still be met. A recently submitted federal correction may not yet be visible when the state attempts to verify the applicant's information.

Take the legal document establishing the change to the appropriate agency and retain an accepted copy for DMV. Updating an employer, bank, or insurance company does not amend the Social Security record. If the names still fail to match after the stated interval, identify which record contains the discrepancy before requesting another card. Repeating a payment or submitting a second DMV application will not correct a mismatch in the underlying source record.

Complete the license or identification-card change

A legal name change requires a personal DMV visit with the supporting records. Use the facility directory to select a location and check current service information. The virtual lobby instructions explain the check-in process where available. Tell the representative if the transaction also includes renewal, replacement of a lost card, or a first REAL ID issuance so the documents and fees are evaluated together.

The official 2025 fee revision sets the name-change charge for a driver license or ID at $10. Consult the DMV fee table when an additional transaction or endorsement is involved. Before leaving, inspect the name's spelling and order as well as the date of birth, class, endorsements, and restrictions. A card with the correct new name can still contain another material error that should be corrected promptly.

Submit an address change through an approved route

Delaware allows a driver license or ID address update through official online services or at a DMV office without an additional address-change fee. Select the appropriate record and enter the physical address completely, including an apartment, building, or unit designation. Review the mailing destination separately when it differs. A postal forwarding request helps route correspondence but does not fulfill the driver's obligation to notify DMV.

The address-change form revised in March 2026 provides a mailed method that records the new residence, separate mailing address, and vehicle plate numbers. It states that new vehicle registration cards are issued after processing and directs customers to online service or a facility to update the license or ID card itself. Complete the signature and contact fields, and use the destination printed on the current form rather than an address copied from an older handout.

Verify vehicle registrations separately

The vehicle name and address instructions explain the additional records affected by a move. Check every registration associated with the household, including a trailer or motorcycle that is not driven regularly. Include the correct plate number for each record being changed. When two people own a vehicle, make clear whose residence or legal name changed and follow the signature instructions that apply to the particular registration.

The myDMV account information describes authenticated services for vehicle-record updates. Review the resulting registration card rather than relying solely on the account profile. A profile email address and a vehicle's registered address serve different purposes. Contact the insurer separately so policy records match the new circumstances; DMV's update does not itself amend coverage, a garaging address, or a lienholder's correspondence information.

Correct a vehicle title after a name change

For a name change on a vehicle title and registration, DMV requests the existing title, registration card, valid Delaware liability-insurance evidence, and either the corrected license or qualifying legal name-change documents. Its published vehicle instructions list a $35 new-title charge when no lien is involved. This is a vehicle-record transaction separate from the $10 driver or ID name change. Additional plate or renewal requests can create further charges.

When the lienholder holds the title, DMV directs the customer to obtain an MV35 form from a facility and send it to the lienholder. The lender returns the title to the originating DMV location, and DMV notifies the customer when it arrives. The published lien-title charge is $55. Coordinate this step before expecting the entire title correction to finish at a single visit, and review the notice for the remaining documents to bring.
