Missouri disability parking credentials follow the eligible person, not a family member's convenience. Applications, medical statements, vehicle plates and the new placard renewal schedule each have their own requirements.

Choose between a portable placard and vehicle plates
The Department of Revenue's disability parking program covers removable placards as well as qualifying vehicle plates. A placard is useful when the eligible person rides in different vehicles; disability plates remain part of a particular vehicle's registration. Neither credential permits an otherwise ineligible person to use an accessible space for a separate errand. Begin with the transportation arrangement: who has the qualifying disability, who owns the vehicle and whether a parent, guardian or organization is applying. That determines which forms and supporting statements are needed before a license office can process the request correctly.
Establish eligibility through the authorized practitioner
The qualifying conditions are stated in section 301.142, including specified limitations on walking, use of assistive devices or portable oxygen, certain respiratory and cardiac limitations, and statutory blindness. Age by itself does not establish eligibility. The practitioner must act within the scope of their professional authority and personally sign the required statement. Missouri's 2026 motor-vehicle law changes include occupational therapists among the authorized professionals. Do not rely on an older form edition to conclude that the new category is excluded. Explain the mobility limitation to the practitioner rather than treating the application as a general diagnosis or benefit application.
Have Form 1776 completed for the right credential
The physician's statement for plates and placards documents whether the disability is permanent or temporary. The ordinary application requires a statement issued within the preceding 90 days. For a temporary condition, the anticipated ending date matters; the statement is not simply a request for the longest available permit. The provider supplies the identifying and professional information and signs the certification. Review it for missing fields before leaving the appointment, since a blank duration or unsigned statement can change or delay processing. Keep the medical certification with the parking application rather than submitting it as a driver-license medical-review report.
Permanent placards have a transition schedule
A permanent Missouri placard has no issuance fee. Revenue's schedule reviewed October 21, 2026 says that, effective August 28, 2026, newly issued and manually renewed placards receive eight-year terms, while automatically renewed placards receive four-year terms during the transition. That transition continues until August 28, 2030. Read the expiration printed on the credential actually issued instead of assuming that every existing placard gained eight years immediately. The renewal cycle also should not be confused with the period for obtaining a new medical statement. Keep a calendar entry for the specific expiration and retain the associated validated receipt.
Temporary permits require a stated end point
Revenue's temporary-placard instructions list a $2 fee and a duration based on the certified disability, not exceeding 180 days. A temporary placard can be renewed once for another period not exceeding 180 days with a new application, new medical statement and another $2 fee. These amounts and limits were checked October 21, 2026. Continued difficulty walking does not extend an expired temporary credential automatically. Arrange any reassessment before the expiration when possible, and let the provider certify the current condition. A temporary parking credential is distinct from a temporary registration permit used after buying a vehicle.
Submit the placard application with supporting evidence
Use Form 2769 to identify the applicant, requested placard type and any other disability credentials already held. The form accommodates a qualifying parent, guardian or organization but still requires the proper basis for that application. An organization supplies its business-need statement as directed, rather than listing an employee's ordinary commute as qualifying transportation. Applications may be handled through the license-office network or mailed using the current form's address. Form 2769 directs mail to PO Box 598, Jefferson City, MO 65105-0598. Make a copy before mailing, particularly when the packet contains a medical statement that would otherwise be difficult to replace.
Preserve the renewal exceptions without skipping the first application
The permanent-placard instructions distinguish an initial medical statement from later renewal requirements. An applicant aged 75 or older who supplied the original statement can qualify for renewal without another statement. A qualifying Veterans Affairs verification of permanent disability also has specific treatment. These exceptions concern the evidence needed at renewal; they do not mean that anyone becomes eligible for disability parking on reaching a birthday. The vehicle-registration questions discuss the comparable documentation issue for disability plates. Keep proof of the original credential and any recognized veteran certification so that a later transaction can be evaluated on the correct basis.
Vehicle plates still require normal registration work
Disability plate applicants must satisfy the underlying vehicle registration requirements using the license application and the appropriate disability evidence. Where ownership differs from the disabled user, the department may require the statement establishing the qualifying use of that vehicle. Do not confuse the ordinary plate registration period with the longer placard term or medical-statement cycle. The registration charges still apply to the vehicle even where no extra disability-plate issuance charge applies. Inspection, tax and insurance documents remain relevant under the renewal requirements. A parking qualification does not exempt the car from the rest of Missouri's licensing system.
Personalized and veteran designs are separate choices
An applicant considering a disability symbol on a specialty design should review the personalized and specialty plate instructions for the chosen program. A requested configuration, organization emblem or specialty eligibility can add documents or charges beyond basic disability qualification. The disabled-veteran plate page describes its own evidence and benefits; veteran status and accessible-parking authorization should not be treated as interchangeable without checking the plate issued. Decide whether portability or a particular plate design better fits the person's transportation needs, then submit the corresponding application instead of sending several inconsistent requests for the same vehicle and credential.
Replace a missing credential through the correct category
For a lost, stolen or damaged permanent placard, Revenue calls for a notarized replacement application and the latest validated receipt; replacement is free under the permanent-placard instructions. A temporary replacement is generally $4, distinct from its $2 original issuance or renewal charge. The form identifies special handling for a credential never received, so mark the actual reason rather than selecting theft by default. Missing the latest receipt may require another medical statement. The motor-vehicle contact page is the route for a record problem. Do not photocopy a placard to create a second usable credential while a replacement is pending.
Use the issued credential only for the eligible trip
Display a removable placard from the mirror while parked, then remove it before driving. Carry its validated registration receipt when it is in use. The privilege applies when the eligible person is present or being picked up or delivered, not whenever the credential happens to be in the vehicle. Return credentials when the holder dies or an organization no longer meets the transportation basis for issuance. Keep the department's address record current through the address-change instructions so that renewal information reaches the right person. A caregiver should maintain the records but cannot inherit the deceased holder's accessible-parking privilege. When the placard is used in another household vehicle, move its validated receipt with it so that the identifying paperwork remains available for the trip receiving the parking accommodation.
Frequently asked questions
Did every Missouri permanent placard immediately become an eight-year placard in August 2026?
Revenue describes a transition in which new and manually renewed placards receive eight years, while automatic renewals retain four-year terms until the stated 2030 transition point.
How much does Missouri charge to issue a temporary disability placard?
The published temporary issuance fee is $2, with the expiration based on the certified period and a maximum of 180 days.
Can a Missouri caregiver use an accessible space while shopping alone with the patient's placard?
The credential is for the eligible person's transportation, including pickup or delivery, rather than an unrelated trip by the caregiver.
Is a new medical statement always required when a Missouri permanent placard holder turns 75?
The age-related exception concerns renewal for someone who supplied the initial qualifying statement; age alone does not create initial eligibility.
Are Missouri disability vehicle plates renewed on the same schedule as portable placards?
Vehicle plates retain their applicable vehicle-registration cycle even when the placard or medical-certification interval is longer.
What should accompany a Missouri replacement permanent-placard application?
Revenue directs applicants to provide the notarized application and latest validated receipt, with additional medical evidence potentially needed if that receipt is unavailable.
