A Missouri move and a legal name change are different transactions. Driver records, vehicle records, and the printed credential each need the appropriate update rather than one assumed statewide change.

Choose the record that actually needs correction
Missouri separates driver-license address maintenance from motor-vehicle and income-tax address maintenance. The Revenue address-change instructions route a driver mailing update through MyDMV or a license office, while vehicle and individual income-tax updates use the separate online address-change request or Form 5805. An online confirmation for one category should not be interpreted as proof that every Revenue account now contains the new address. Make a short inventory of the records involved: your driving credential, each vehicle registration, any disability placard, and other Revenue correspondence. This is especially important after moving while a renewal or replacement card is already being processed.
Understand what the driver mailing service changes
Use the official MyDMV service for an available driver mailing-address update, following the transaction shown for your record. The driver-system service description distinguishes online address maintenance from ordering a duplicate or renewing a credential. Changing a mailing record is not the same purchase as receiving a replacement card displaying different information. Read the confirmation before paying for an additional transaction. If the purpose is to obtain a card with the new address, review the duplicate option and its eligibility rather than assuming a free database update starts card production. Keep the confirmation with your move documents until subsequent mail arrives correctly.
Document a legal name change in person
The Missouri name-change requirements call for identity, Social Security number, residence, and an acceptable legal-name-change record. The state captures a new signature, and a new photograph may also be needed. A marriage announcement, informal name-use statement, or newly printed bank card does not replace the required legal evidence. For marriage, obtain the original certified record from the authorized recorder, vital-statistics office, or equivalent issuing agency. For divorce, the decree must actually establish the court-ordered name and carry the required court certification. Compare the name on each supporting document before visiting, particularly when there have been several marriages or prior court changes.
Build the complete chain rather than just the latest certificate
The credential application checklist is useful for separating the identity record from documents explaining why the current name differs. An initial REAL ID application may require several certified name-change records to connect the original identity evidence to the current full legal name. For example, the latest marriage certificate may not explain an earlier change from the birth-certificate name. Bring the connecting records, not just the final document. The REAL ID document planner helps identify the categories needed before the appointment. Documents that merely show everyday use of the desired name are not necessarily the legal chain that the licensing clerk must verify.
Distinguish renewal timing from replacement timing
As reviewed October 21, 2026, Missouri permits early renewal within six months, or 184 days, before expiration. The driver-license transaction FAQ and the detailed document guidance explain why a person changing a name near expiration may renew instead of purchasing a duplicate and then returning shortly afterward. The official credential fee chart lists a Class F duplicate at $16.50 when the prior license was a three-year credential and $25.50 when it was a six-year credential. An ordinary Class F renewal is $16.50 for the applicable three-year term or $33 for the six-year term. Other classes have their own charges; do not apply the passenger-license price to a CDL.
Bring evidence for a genuinely new residential address
The state allows certain existing noncommercial holders to certify that a previously documented address is unchanged. That exception does not establish a newly occupied home. Review the residence categories in the Missouri Driver Guide and bring current acceptable evidence naming you and the new address. A REAL ID transaction normally requires two acceptable residence documents from different sources. Non-REAL ID noncommercial transactions ordinarily require one, while a commercial-license or permit application has its own two-document domicile requirement. A post office box is a mailing location, not ordinary proof of the residence where you actually live. Supply separate alternate-mailing evidence when the transaction requires it.
Route vehicle changes independently
For vehicles, the Address Change Request, Form 5805 provides separate spaces for plates, expiration years, disability placards, and boat or outboard-motor title numbers. Complete the relevant identifiers so Revenue can locate the particular records. Updating only a car while overlooking a motorcycle or trailer can leave later renewal correspondence at the old address. The motor-vehicle service directory provides the appropriate transaction path when a move also requires a registration action. An address request does not transfer ownership, remove a lienholder, or substitute for a title application following a sale. Those changes require their own evidence and review.
Protect confidential addresses through the authorized program
People enrolled in Missouri's Safe at Home address-confidentiality program have a specific residence and mailing-document route recognized by the Department. The program card is not simply an informal request to suppress the address. Follow the enrollment and credential instructions instead of putting a fictitious residence on the application. This distinction also matters when obtaining a copy of a driver record: access to personal information is controlled separately from changing where official correspondence is sent. A landlord, employer, or other third party cannot use the address-update process to obtain unrestricted access to someone else's protected driving information.
Resolve inconsistencies before they become delivery problems
Use a Missouri license office for a name change or another transaction requiring original-document inspection. Compare the application screen, receipt, and temporary document before leaving. Check apartment numbers, directional street prefixes, name suffixes, and the selected mailing destination. If a recent order was already in production when you moved, ask the Department how that specific order will be handled instead of assuming postal forwarding will solve it. Where the driving record also contains an unresolved suspension, consult the reinstatement instructions separately: correcting a name or address does not restore authority to drive. Preserve the old and new record references until the correction is confirmed.
Example: a move involving several registered items
Consider a household that moves with a passenger car, motorcycle, small trailer, and a boat whose outboard motor has a separate title. The useful vehicle request identifies the relevant plates and title numbers, not simply the owner's name. Form 5805 provides fields for those different identifiers and for disabled placards. Check which records belong to each owner before signing; one household member's change should not be assumed to update another person's separate registration. Then complete the driver-license mailing update for each affected credential holder. This is a records-management example, not a new fee requirement, and it explains why a single forwarded renewal letter does not establish that all records were corrected.
Frequently asked questions
Does Missouri Form 5805 update my driver-license mailing address?
The current Revenue page directs driver-license mailing changes to MyDMV or a license office; Form 5805 serves the listed vehicle and tax records.
Can my marriage certificate replace every identity document at a Missouri office?
A certified marriage record supports the name change, but the application still requires the applicable identity, Social Security, and residence verification.
Is a recently changed bank-card name enough for a license name change?
Missouri requires an accepted legal-name-change document, not merely a financial account displaying the preferred name.
Should I buy a duplicate just before my Missouri license expires?
Within the state's 184-day early-renewal window, a renewal may address the name change and approaching expiration in one application.
Will one vehicle address request necessarily find every plate I own?
Identify the affected registrations and other records on the designated request rather than assuming an incomplete list updates all of them.
Does an address correction remove a Missouri driving suspension?
The correction changes record information; the separate suspension requirements must still be satisfied before driving privileges are restored.
