About this guide

Choose the Illinois replacement channel before paying, especially if you need a temporary license immediately. An online duplicate keeps the existing information and does not provide temporary driving documentation. A changed address, stolen-card fee waiver, near expiration, or out-of-state mailing need can change the correct route.

In this guide: Identify the problem before ordering a card, Decide whether you need a temporary license now, Check all online exclusions, Report theft and protect the licensing record, Bring the right proof to a facility, Apply the replacement fee and its exceptions, Handle an address change through correction, Deal with a temporary absence or military assignment, Track the permanent card without overlooking a conflict, Manage physical and mobile credentials together, Frequently Asked Questions

Identify the problem before ordering a card

A duplicate reproduces the information already on the driving record. A corrected license changes information such as name or address, while a renewal extends the credential through the appropriate renewal process. The duplicate and corrected license instructions distinguish these transactions. If the license is missing but also expired, suspended, or inaccurate, simply buying another copy may not resolve the reason it cannot be used.

Write down what happened and what you need next. Someone who lost a wallet but retains valid driving privileges has a different task from someone whose document was held by a court or whose address recently changed. Review the online duplicate eligibility page before entering payment information so the chosen transaction fits the circumstances.

Decide whether you need a temporary license now

The SOS online replacement instructions explicitly say the online system does not provide a temporary driver's license or state ID. They also warn that after completing an online duplicate transaction, the customer cannot obtain a temporary credential from a facility for that transaction. This is a practical reason to choose the facility route at the outset when immediate temporary documentation is needed.

A photograph of the lost card, a payment receipt, or an order confirmation does not serve the same role as the state's temporary license. The facility replacement procedure supplies the secure temporary document while the permanent copy is produced. Plan lawful transportation to the facility if you cannot presently carry the required driving credential, rather than assuming an online order creates paper authorization to drive.

Check all online exclusions

The replacement service excludes licenses or cards that are suspended, revoked, or canceled, records with certain reinstatement issues, credentials held elsewhere, and requests requiring changes. Instruction permits, commercial learner's permits, specified TVDLs, homeless IDs, and credentials valid without a photograph and signature also require another route. Read the complete eligibility list for the exact type of document lost.

The same page excludes a credential expiring within 30 days and limits online replacements after three duplicates in the preceding 12 months or ten over a lifetime (checked October 20, 2026). It also excludes applicants who previously changed the address online or by mail and those needing delivery to a temporary address. An exclusion from the website does not necessarily mean no replacement is possible; it means Driver Services must handle the circumstances through the appropriate alternative process.

Report theft and protect the licensing record

The Secretary of State licensing FAQ advises contacting local police about a lost or stolen license or ID. Describe what is known, including whether theft occurred, and retain the report information. A theft report can also support the replacement-fee waiver listed by the state. Do not label an ordinary loss as a theft merely to avoid a charge.

If there is reason to suspect misuse, review the official driving abstract process and contact Driver Services about discrepancies. A replacement card does not erase incorrect convictions or actions entered on a record. Keep any relevant police and court papers so the record issue can be investigated through the agency responsible for the particular entry, separately from printing a new card.

Bring the right proof to a facility

For an unchanged duplicate, the document requirements call for evidence from Group A, covering written signature. Consult the accepted-document list for usable records when the driver's license itself is missing. A major credit or debit card, certain government records, or another listed document may help, but each must meet the state's stated conditions.

If correcting the address or name at the same visit, bring the additional residence or legal linking evidence. The personal document checklist includes replacement and correction choices to help assemble the appropriate folder. A person applying for a first REAL ID at that visit needs the full compliant-document set; replacement eligibility alone does not satisfy the REAL ID checklist.

Apply the replacement fee and its exceptions

The Driver Services schedule lists an ordinary duplicate driver's license or permit at $5 (checked October 20, 2026). It separately provides no-fee replacement categories, including a stolen credential supported by a police report and lost or stolen licenses for people 60 or older (checked October 20, 2026). Active-duty service members and qualifying family members also have a listed duplicate-fee exception.

Bring the evidence for the exception rather than assuming the online charge will be refunded later. The online payment section accepts listed credit and debit cards or electronic checks, with credit-card processing charges and a waived e-check processor fee (checked October 20, 2026). Review the total and the transaction description before submitting, especially if the document being replaced is an ID card with a different fee schedule.

Handle an address change through correction

The Illinois address-change service updates the license or state ID record separately from vehicle registration. Updating the records is free, but it does not print a new physical card; a corrected card requires the applicable in-person process and charge (checked October 20, 2026). If you already reported a move, remember that the online duplicate eligibility rules may now require facility service.

Bring the residence evidence specified for your current credential type. A standard corrected license and a REAL ID correction have different residence-document counts under the correction rules. Check apartment numbers and other delivery details carefully. Replacing a missing card at an obsolete address can create another lost-mail problem without giving you a usable credential.

Deal with a temporary absence or military assignment

The out-of-state replacement FAQ directs absent Illinois residents to the Out-of-State Licensing Unit and discusses special arrangements when the person will remain away for more than 90 days (checked October 20, 2026). Contact the unit before placing an ordinary online order that cannot be mailed to the intended temporary address.

The out-of-state and military instructions identify the relevant SOS assistance. Explain whether you need a duplicate, a renewal, or a military deferral certificate because those are different documents. A family member receiving mail in Illinois cannot automatically convert an ineligible online transaction into an approved outside-address replacement. Follow the agency's mailing and application directions for the actual absence.

Track the permanent card without overlooking a conflict

The dedicated duplicate page and central issuance instructions give an expected permanent-card delivery period of 15 business days and describe a facility-issued temporary license valid for 90 days (checked October 20, 2026). The general licensing FAQ still says an online replacement arrives in 7-10 days, a shorter published estimate (checked October 20, 2026). Use the dedicated transaction guidance for planning and check the actual status rather than treating either estimate as guaranteed delivery.

The card mailing-status lookup helps investigate a missing permanent credential. Keep the transaction reference and any temporary document available when contacting SOS. Repeatedly buying duplicates is not a good substitute for locating an address, verification, or production problem. The Driver's License Contact form provides an official route for explaining an unresolved service issue.

Manage physical and mobile credentials together

Illinois's Mobile ID support says enrollment requires images of the physical card, so someone who has not enrolled and loses that card must obtain a replacement first. An existing mobile credential remains a companion, not a substitute for the physical license required while driving. A lost phone and a lost physical license therefore involve different recovery steps.

For a license nearing expiration, compare replacement with renewal eligibility before choosing the service. After receiving the new card, check the class, restrictions, name, address, and expiration against the correct record. If the old card later turns up, follow the state's instructions for its disposition and avoid keeping multiple copies in circulation as interchangeable identification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Illinois online duplicate service give me a printable temporary license?
The dedicated replacement page says it does not, and directs customers who need temporary documentation to choose a facility before completing an online order.

Can I change my Illinois license name as part of an unchanged online duplicate?
A name change belongs in the corrected-license procedure, which requires the state to review evidence linking the names.

How can a theft report affect the Illinois duplicate charge?
The fee schedule provides a stolen-license replacement waiver when the required police report is supplied; the report should truthfully describe the theft.

Why might Illinois reject an online duplicate after I reported a move?
The online exclusions specifically cover a prior address update by mail or online, making facility assistance necessary for that replacement situation.

What should I do if I lost my Illinois license while temporarily living elsewhere?
Discuss delivery and eligibility with the unit identified in the out-of-state FAQ before ordering through a system intended to mail to the Illinois address.

Can Illinois Mobile ID enrollment begin without the physical card I lost?
The enrollment instructions require scanning the physical credential, so replacing that card is the first step when it is unavailable.
