About this guide

An Illinois REAL ID adds federal identity verification to a driver's license or state ID. The application is easiest when you settle your legal name, gather two acceptable residence records, and choose the correct facility service before traveling. Existing standard cards do not bypass that first REAL ID review.

Decide whether to request a REAL ID

Illinois identifies a compliant license or state ID with a gold star in the upper corner. The state's REAL ID FAQ explains its use for domestic air travel and certain federal facilities, and lists other accepted identification options. A standard Illinois license remains usable for its driving privileges. Choose the credential based on how you will establish identity, rather than assuming the star changes the type of vehicle you may operate.

Someone who does not drive can request a REAL ID state identification card. Illinois permits only one REAL ID form at a time, so decide whether the compliant credential should be the license or the state ID. A valid passport may already meet the travel need, but it does not replace an Illinois license for driving.

Treat the first upgrade as a new verification

The Secretary of State document rules say that a first REAL ID requires the first-time documentation even when an applicant already holds or previously held a standard Illinois card. Bringing only the existing license and a renewal letter can therefore be insufficient for an upgrade. The clerk must verify the evidence required for the compliant credential.

Prepare the documents before using the appointment service. Choose the REAL ID service where the scheduling system distinguishes it. The general SOS document organizer helps identify the transaction, while the dedicated REAL ID checklist gives the actual compliant-document options. Keep those functions separate: the checklist is preparation assistance, not a certificate approving the paperwork in advance.

Establish identity and citizenship or lawful status

Accepted identity options on the official checklist include a certified birth certificate, valid U.S. passport or passport card, citizenship or naturalization certificate, permanent resident card, and specified employment or immigration documents. The evidence must establish the applicant's full legal name and date of birth as well as the required status. Do not assume that a document accepted for a standard card is also sufficient here.

The Illinois identification list marks documents accepted for REAL ID and explains verification conditions. A foreign passport route includes the necessary visa and approved admission record described by the checklist. Present the related documents together. A passport alone can identify its holder without establishing every lawful-status fact the REAL ID review requires.

Use the correct Social Security proof

The Social Security section allows an applicant with a valid Illinois license or state ID, other than a TVDL, to bring that credential for reverification of the number already held by the state. An applicant without that qualifying Illinois credential needs an accepted document displaying the full Social Security number. Examples include the Social Security card, a full-number W-2, or a qualifying pay statement.

Check that the name on the document can be connected to the name on the application. Redacting the account or identification information the state needs can make otherwise acceptable evidence unusable. The SOS verification procedure explains that unverified identifying information can block issuance, so resolve a known name or number mismatch before counting on a same-visit approval.

Bring two usable Illinois residence records

The REAL ID preparation page requires two proofs of Illinois residence and accepts printed electronic documents for that purpose. The records should show the applicant's name and full residence address, matching the intended application. A post office arrangement does not automatically replace the physical residence information the state needs.

The residency checklist limits examples such as utility bills, bank statements, and credit card statements to 90 days, while a credit report may be dated within 12 months (checked October 20, 2026). Check the date requirement attached to each selected record. Using the latest statement can prevent avoidable uncertainty, but printing the same statement twice does not turn it into two independent documents.

Temporary lawful status can affect expiration

The REAL ID eligibility guidance recognizes eligible applicants with temporary lawful status, including certain student, employment, DACA, or protected-status documents when the other requirements are met. It also explains that the credential's expiration can follow the lawful-status period and that a new card requires evidence supporting an extension. Do not assume every approved applicant receives the same birthday-based expiration.

The noncitizen standard-license fact sheet concerns a different pathway for people formerly eligible for TVDLs. A standard license obtained through that process is not automatically converted into REAL ID by renewal or mobile enrollment. If the applicant's status or documents have changed, request a fresh review of REAL ID eligibility instead of buying a duplicate of the standard card and expecting a gold star.

Select a facility and budget the correct fee

The Driver Services facility finder identifies locations and current service information. The REAL ID page also lists the walk-in Supercenter at 191 N. Clark Street in Chicago, Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM, with its operation extended through the end of 2026 (checked October 20, 2026). Check the listing before traveling because a specialized location's services may differ from a general license-testing facility.

Illinois says REAL ID uses the same relevant license or ID fee as the standard credential, with the amount depending on the applicant and transaction. The fee schedule lists a license at $30 for ages 21-68 and a five-year state ID at $20 for ages 18-64 (checked October 20, 2026). Age-based exceptions, replacements, corrections, or an upgrade outside renewal can change the applicable transaction charge; confirm that category before paying.

Address special ID circumstances

A person using the disability ID program must provide a new Person with a Disability Identification Card application when switching to REAL ID, according to the REAL ID FAQ. The medical form must be dated within three months (checked October 20, 2026). The disability classification does not replace the compliant identity documentation.

Someone using Homeless Status Certification should note that the form specifically supports a standard state ID and does not establish all identity facts. Ask Driver Services how the desired credential and available documents fit together. The program's fee rules should not be treated as a waiver of the separate REAL ID evidence requirements.

Plan for the permanent card

The current issuance guidance says the permanent REAL ID should arrive within 15 business days and recommends applying at least one month before travel (checked October 20, 2026). The temporary paper document supplied at the facility is not the permanent compliant card. Do not schedule a trip on the assumption that a temporary printout will function identically at a security checkpoint.

Use the credential mailing-status service to investigate delivery. Some older SOS text discusses temporary credentials and additional airport screening, but the current REAL ID landing page specifically directs travelers to the permanent card or another accepted identification option. If Illinois Mobile ID is already enrolled, the state says the REAL ID status will update in the mobile credential after the upgrade. Continue carrying the physical identification required for the journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an Illinois resident obtain REAL ID without being a driver?
A compliant state identification card is available through the process described in the REAL ID FAQ, subject to the same identity-verification categories.

Will my Illinois standard license automatically become REAL ID at renewal?
The first compliant credential requires the evidence described in the first-time REAL ID rules, so an ordinary renewal alone does not complete the upgrade.

Does every Illinois REAL ID applicant need to locate a separate Social Security card?
The checklist allows eligible holders of a valid Illinois credential to have their previously recorded number reverified instead of providing an additional SSN document.

Can a current-name passport simplify an Illinois REAL ID name change?
The name-change brochure recognizes a valid passport in the current legal name as an identity route that can avoid additional name-chain documents.

Should I rely on a temporary Illinois REAL ID printout for my flight?
The current REAL ID guidance tells travelers to plan around the permanent card or another accepted identification document, rather than treating the facility printout as the finished credential.

Does an Illinois REAL ID upgrade affect an existing Mobile ID?
The state REAL ID page says an enrolled mobile credential receives the new compliant status automatically, while physical-card carrying requirements continue.
