About this guide

Illinois separates updating its records from printing a corrected card. A move can require updates to both Driver Services and vehicle registration, while a legal name change requires evidence connecting the names. Plan the correction around the type of credential you hold and any renewal already approaching.

Decide which information has changed

A new residence, legal name, birth-date correction, and gender designation involve different supporting evidence. The Secretary of State correction instructions explain that a corrected credential changes information on the original card, whereas a duplicate reproduces it. Start by listing the records affected rather than ordering an unchanged replacement and hoping the new information appears automatically.

For a move, consider both the personal credential and every vehicle registration associated with the old address. The address-change system explains that license or state ID records and vehicle registration records are separate systems. Submitting one update does not mean the other has been changed. Keep the confirmation for each affected record so renewal notices and permanent cards have the correct destination.

Meet the reporting requirement

The license correction rules require notice of a name or address change within 10 days (checked October 20, 2026). Report the change even if the physical card will not be replaced immediately. A long remaining license term is not a reason to leave the state's record at an obsolete address.

The in-state move instructions explain that an ordinary move does not automatically require an immediate new card; the person still must update the address record. The general card instructions direct drivers to update the physical card at a facility before its expiration. A CDL holder has an additional corrected-card deadline, discussed separately below. Distinguish these obligations rather than treating every address report as a renewal.

Submit an ordinary address update correctly

The official online address service permits a free record update and reminds the applicant to submit changes for both the license or ID and vehicle registration (checked October 20, 2026). Read each confirmation screen and make sure the intended record was selected. A postal change-of-address request does not amend the Secretary of State database.

Enter the residence accurately, including apartment or unit information. If the address includes a special mailing arrangement or a post office box, confirm the appropriate process with Driver Services before assuming every field can be changed remotely. The online renewal exclusions specifically identify adding a post office box as a situation requiring a facility visit. The correct process depends on the transaction as well as the wording of the address.

Know when you need a physical corrected card

A corrected card is useful when the printed information must match the current record. Under the corrected-license procedure, applicants visit a Driver Services facility, turn in the incorrect credential, and present the required identification. Report an address promptly even if scheduling the card correction will take longer; the record and card are related but separate steps.

The online duplicate service excludes requests that change information and also excludes people who previously changed an address by mail or online. Do not use that system as an assumed workaround for obtaining a new-address card. Select the correction or renewal service that permits review of the changed information, and retain the old credential for surrender where instructed.

Gather residence proof for your credential type

The corrected-card document rules require Group A signature evidence and, for an address change, one Group D residence document for a standard card or two for REAL ID. The accepted-document page gives the eligible records and their conditions. Another household member's statement should not be treated as your own address evidence unless the state identifies an applicable special route.

For common examples such as a utility bill, bank statement, or credit card statement, Illinois specifies a 90-day recency limit (checked October 20, 2026). Check that your name and complete new residence appear clearly and that account details required by the state remain visible. A printout of an accepted electronic residence statement may be suitable; a cropped image that omits the identifying information may not be.

Address Social Security and other record mismatches

The Social Security verification section explains that SOS checks identifying information with the Social Security Administration before issuance or renewal. If a legal name change has created inconsistent records, resolve the verification issue through the appropriate agencies before expecting the Illinois card to be issued. Present the legal linking document instead of treating a failed verification as a simple typographical inconvenience.

Changes to birth date, Social Security number, or gender also require the evidence specified by the correction instructions. Illinois provides a separate Gender Designation Change Form, which requests an original ink signature and offers the available designation choices. A gender update and a legal name update should not be assumed to use the same document or automatically accomplish one another.

Check the correction fee rather than the duplicate fee

The Driver Services schedule lists an ordinary corrected driver's license or permit at $5, a corrected state ID at $10, and a corrected ID for a person under 18 at $5 (checked October 20, 2026). It lists reduced or free corrections in specified older-age categories. Those amounts differ from some duplicate-card charges, making the transaction name relevant to the total.

The gender-change instructions say that adding that change during renewal has no additional fee, while a change outside renewal carries the relevant corrected-card charge (checked October 20, 2026). If combining a renewal with other updates, ask the facility which fees apply to the entire transaction. Do not purchase an unnecessary duplicate before the planned corrected card or renewal.

Follow the separate CDL deadline when applicable

For commercial license holders moving or changing their name, the CDL move instructions require notification within 10 days and a corrected license within 30 days (checked October 20, 2026). The online record update alone does not complete the corrected-card requirement. Bring the proof of the new information to the proper facility.

A driver who also owns vehicles should still update their registration addresses independently. Commercial driving paperwork may involve an employer's records as well as the state credential, but notifying the employer is not the same as notifying SOS. Keep copies of the state confirmations available if the timing of the update later needs to be demonstrated.

Coordinate with renewal and REAL ID

The renewal eligibility page helps determine whether a scheduled renewal can accommodate the needed update or requires an in-person visit. A first REAL ID is more than an address correction, even if the driver is already bringing residence documents. The REAL ID overview explains the additional identity and status verification behind the gold star.

Use the SOS checklist to organize all parts of a combined visit, and book through the official appointment service. Tell the clerk at the outset that the transaction includes a legal change or move. That allows the documentation and fee to be assessed against the intended final card rather than correcting an incomplete transaction afterward.

Review the issued information and mail delivery

The corrected-license issuance instructions expect the permanent card within 15 business days after completion (checked October 20, 2026). Inspect the temporary credential immediately, particularly the spelling and address that caused the correction. Use the status lookup if delivery is delayed and the official licensing contact form for an unresolved discrepancy.

If you use Illinois Mobile ID, remember that it depends on the state credential record; a phone wallet is not the service for legally changing your name or address. Complete the SOS update first, then follow any wallet instructions needed to reflect the corrected credential. Keep the physical card available for driving and for recipients that require it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does reporting an Illinois address online automatically produce a new license?
The address service updates the selected record, while the physical corrected card requires the separate process described by Driver Services.

Will an Illinois license address change also update every vehicle registration?
The official instructions describe separate personal-credential and registration systems, so submit and retain confirmation of each required update.

Can I use an Illinois online duplicate to print a different surname?
A changed legal name belongs in the corrected-card procedure, with evidence connecting the names, rather than an unchanged duplicate order.

Why does Illinois request more residence evidence for a REAL ID correction?
The correction table assigns an additional residence document to the compliant credential, so follow the rule for the card actually being corrected.

Does an Illinois gender designation form also legally change my name?
The designation form addresses the gender entry; a name correction still requires the legal linking evidence requested in the name-change instructions.

What should I check before leaving an Illinois correction appointment?
Read the temporary credential against the submitted documents, especially the corrected spelling and delivery address, then use the mailing-status system if the permanent copy requires follow-up.
