Tickets written by the Lompoc police, the Sheriff or the CHP all go to the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Barbara, which hears traffic infractions at the Lompoc Courthouse. Parking tickets are the exception: they are paid to the agency that wrote them.
This guide covers the court notice, paying, traffic school, fix-it tickets, contesting, missed dates, records and common questions.
The other Lompoc guides cover Lompoc public records, arrest records, warrants, inmate search, criminal records, court records, police reports, DUI, divorce records and property records.
After You Get a Ticket
The officer writes a date on the ticket, about three weeks out, by which you must contact the court. The court mails a courtesy notice 10 to 15 days after the ticket with the amount due; it cannot quote the bail before the police deliver the ticket. You must act by the date on the ticket whether or not the notice arrives.
Paying a Ticket
Pay online at any hour through the court's Public Portal, by phone at (805) 568-3959, by mail with the stub from the notice, or at a clerk's office between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays. The court also offers payment plans and, for people who cannot pay, community service or a fine reduced for financial hardship. Details are on the court's Traffic and Minor Offenses page.
Traffic Violator School
Traffic school keeps the conviction off the public driving record that insurers see. Sign up with the court by the due date and pay the bail plus a $66 court fee; the school charges its own fee.
- You need a valid driver's license and may not have attended traffic school for a ticket within the past 18 months.
- The ticket must be a one-point infraction, not in a commercial vehicle, not for more than 25 miles an hour over the limit, not involving alcohol or drugs, and not marked for a mandatory appearance.
- The court can grant one 30-day extension to finish, if you ask before the due date.
Fix-It Tickets
For a correctable violation, such as an equipment repair, registration, or a license or insurance card not carried, bring or mail the proof of correction with a $25 fee per violation by the due date and the violation is dismissed. Someone cited for no insurance who then buys a policy can show it for a reduced fine of $300. The court grants one 30-day extension for proof of correction if asked by the due date.
Contesting a Ticket
- A court trial: plead not guilty at the clerk's office by the due date. The officer is subpoenaed. A trial date cannot be changed within 10 days of the trial.
- A trial by written declaration: plead not guilty in writing and post the full bail; both sides submit written statements and a judicial officer decides.
- An appeal from a trial goes to the court's Appellate Division, which reviews the trial record; it is not a new trial.
If You Miss the Date
The court adds a civil assessment of up to $100, can treat the missed date as a failure to appear, and sends the debt to its collection agency; your driving privilege may be affected. If you show the court good cause within 60 days of the notice, it may not impose the assessment.
Driving Records and Parking Tickets
The court reports convictions to the DMV, which keeps the driving record; order it from the DMV records page. Parking tickets written by the Lompoc police are paid to the city, not the court. The police Traffic Unit, one sergeant and one motorcycle officer, can be reached at (805) 875-8130; the department says it sets no ticket quotas.
