About this guide

A report belongs to the agency whose officer wrote it. Inside the city that is the Lompoc Police Department; outside it, the Sheriff; on the highways, the California Highway Patrol.

This guide covers Lompoc police reports, filing without an officer, Sheriff's reports, CHP crash reports, what the law allows and common questions.

The other Lompoc guides cover Lompoc public records, arrest records, warrants, inmate search, criminal records, court records, traffic tickets, DUI, divorce records and property records.

Lompoc Police Department Reports

The Records Bureau at 107 Civic Center Plaza handles report requests. A written request is encouraged but not required; the department prefers its records request form, posted on its Manuals and Forms page, and answers within 10 days. Send it by email to lpdrecords@ci.lompoc.ca.us, bring it in, or call (805) 736-2341.

  • Email delivery: free.
  • Paper copies: 20 cents a page.
  • USB drive: $2.
  • Payment: cash, a check to the Lompoc Police Department, or Visa or Mastercard with a 3.75 percent fee. Debit cards are not taken.

The form covers crime and incident reports, traffic collision reports and calls for service; for calls for service, use one form per location and give the dates. The requester signs under penalty of perjury as the person involved, a parent of a juvenile involved, the owner of the property, the arrestee, or someone with a signed waiver from one of them. No identification is needed to file a Public Records Act request, but proof is required for records the law restricts, such as those about juveniles, victims, open investigations, or yourself.

Records lobby hours are Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Filing a Report Without an Officer

For theft under $950, lost property, vandalism, identity theft, a stolen Social Security number or a stolen bicycle, with no suspect seen and no violence, the department takes a written Citizen Crime Report. Return it within 10 days by mail, fax to 805-735-8256, or in person; a case number is assigned and it takes about 10 working days to process. Instructions are on the Citizen Crime Report page.

Sheriff's Reports Outside the City

For Mission Hills, Vandenberg Village, Mesa Oaks and the rest of the unincorporated area, call the Sheriff's Records Unit at (805) 681-4180 to confirm a report is ready; a report usually takes 7 to 10 days to be finished, and the unit may take 10 more days to decide on release.

  • Report copies: $15 for up to 10 pages, 10 cents for each page after that.
  • Photos or audio on CD: $25; video on DVD: $40.
  • Calls for service: $20.

Crime reports go to victims, their representatives, their insurers and people who suffered injury or loss; collision reports to the drivers, owners, passengers, insurers and their lawyers; juvenile reports only through the Juvenile Court. The rules are on the Sheriff's Records Bureau page.

Crash Reports From the CHP

Crashes on the state highways around Lompoc are investigated by the CHP Buellton Area office, 166 Industrial Way, Buellton, (805) 688-5551. A driver, passenger, owner, parent of a minor or legal guardian can get the report at any CHP office, or by mail with form CHP 190 and a copy of a photo ID. The CHP charges $10 for up to 25 pages and $20 for 26 to 50. See the CHP 190 page.

What the Law Allows

Under the California Public Records Act an agency must answer a request within 10 days, with up to 14 more in unusual circumstances, and may charge only the direct cost of copies. Investigation files can be withheld, but the basic facts of an incident and of an arrest are public, and victims, people injured and their insurers have a right to more. A crash report is required by law only when someone is hurt or killed, and a report the police take is sent to the DMV.
