About this guide

In California the public criminal record is the court file. The state's own criminal history is closed to the public, so a search for someone else's record starts at the courthouse.

This guide covers court files, copies, local criminal history, state record, prosecutor and defense and common questions.

The other Lompoc guides cover Lompoc public records, arrest records, warrants, inmate search, court records, police reports, traffic tickets, DUI, divorce records and property records.

Criminal Cases at the Lompoc Courthouse

Criminal cases from Lompoc are heard by the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Barbara, at the Lompoc Courthouse, 115 Civic Center Plaza; felonies and misdemeanors are both handled there. The criminal and traffic clerk is at (805) 737-7789, phone hours 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Court files are presumed open unless a law makes them confidential or a judge seals them. The court has no online criminal name index; a name search is done on the public access terminals in the Lompoc Courthouse lobby, or by a written copy request. If you have the case number, the court's Public Portal shows the register of actions.

Copies of a Criminal Court File

Requests for Lompoc cases go to North County Records, 312-E East Cook Street, Santa Maria, CA 93454, (805) 614-6414, or by email to northcountyrecords@sbcourts.org, on the court's Copy Request Form from its Court Records page. Expect up to 14 business days.

  • Copies: 50 cents a page.
  • Certified copies: $40 per document plus the copy fee; certified copies are mailed or picked up, not emailed.
  • A search taking more than 10 minutes: $15.
  • Invoice fee: $1; card payments carry a 2.9 percent plus 60 cent surcharge.

Local Criminal History From the Police and the Sheriff

The Lompoc Police Department gives a person their own local criminal history under Penal Code section 13300 for $20, with photo identification, on the form on its Manuals and Forms page. It lists Lompoc police arrests only; the department sends people to the court's Criminal Division for how a case ended.

The Sheriff's Sheriff's Records Bureau issues a local criminal history for $25 or a clearance letter for $37.

Your California Criminal History

The record kept by the California Department of Justice is released to the person it belongs to and to employers and agencies the law authorizes, never to the public. To see your own, ask for a Record Review: Live Scan fingerprints on form BCIA 8016RR and a $25 state fee, described on the Department's Record Review page. It cannot be used for immigration or visa purposes.

The Lompoc Police Department takes Live Scan fingerprints by appointment on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; its rolling fee is $40, cash or check, and the state and FBI fees are cash only. Call (805) 736-2341. Details are on the Livescan page.
