Ordering online
DPS calls the online order at Texas.gov the most convenient. It needs the number of the most recently issued Texas license, CDL or ID card and the audit number printed on that card, the date of birth, the last four digits of the Social Security number, Adobe Reader, the current Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer browser (Edge is not compatible and cannot print), a Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express card, and the ability to print or email the record right after purchase. The password for the printed record is the driver license number.
Ordering by mail
Complete the driver record request form DR-1, follow its instructions, and send it with payment to Texas Department of Public Safety, PO Box 149008, Austin, Texas 78714-9008; DPS asks for three weeks of processing from receipt. The mail route is also the way to get a record without the audit number; a driver who needs the record for a court before then asks the court for an extension, in DPS's advice.
Correcting the record
Crashes on the record come from the Texas Department of Transportation, so a crash that does not belong there is disputed with TxDOT's Crash Records Information System at (800) 558-9368; crash reports themselves are bought from TxDOT at cris.dot.state.tx.us. A drug or DWI conviction that is not yours is corrected by the court that filed the original report, which may ask for proof that you are not the person involved; DPS updates the record within 21 business days of the court's correction notice. DPS's driver record FAQ carries both answers. A mandatory suspension entered by mistake is removed when the court faxes a DPS correction form to the Conviction Reporting Department at (512) 424-5809 with the citation number and offense date, within about 10 business days.
Checking the license status for free
The record is not the only way to see where a license stands. DPS's License Eligibility page on Texas.gov shows the current status, whether the license is eligible, suspended or denied, the compliance items needed for a reinstatement and any fees owed, and takes payment of reinstatement, occupational and interlock fees; it also shows whether a commercial driver's medical certificate has posted. The reinstatement guide explains what the status page asks for.
Questions about driver records
Which record does a defensive driving course need?
A Type 3A, the certified list of all crashes and violations, is the only record type DPS says can be used for a defensive driving course, and most courts require it; DPS adds that the court should confirm the type for the case.
Can I get a record at a driver license office?
No. DPS says it cannot provide in-person driver record services at any of its locations; records are ordered online or by mail.
What is the password to open the record?
The driver license number, according to DPS's driver record FAQ. The Microsoft Edge browser does not work with the service; Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer and Adobe Reader are needed to print.
A crash on my record is not mine. How is it removed?
Crash records come from the Texas Department of Transportation; DPS says to contact its Crash Records Information System at (800) 558-9368 to dispute one.
A conviction on my record is wrong. Who fixes it?
The court that reported it. DPS updates the record within 21 business days of receiving the court's correction notice.
I was charged twice. How do I get a refund?
Email DPS's E-Commerce Section with your contact information and an explanation; DPS says a representative answers within two to three business days.
