About this guide

State by state guides to driver licenses, ID cards, vehicle registration, titles, fees and offices, each written from that state's own motor vehicle agency pages and nothing else: California, where one Department of Motor Vehicles does everything, and Texas, where the Department of Public Safety issues licenses and the county tax offices register vehicles for the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

In this guide: California DMV, Texas DMV, How these guides are written, Questions about the DMV guides

California DMV

The California DMV guide covers driver's licenses and ID cards, REAL ID, vehicle registration and renewal, titles, smog checks, every fee, and the 2026 holidays, with 44 topic guides and a page for each of the DMV's 185 field offices and Industry Business Centers on the California offices list: hours for every day, services, payment types, wait times at reading, and the nearest kiosks. California's DMV customer service number is 1-800-777-0133.

Texas DMV

The Texas DMV guide explains the split between the Texas Department of Public Safety, which issues driver licenses, commercial licenses and ID cards at 236 driver license offices by appointment, and the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, whose vehicle work runs through the 254 county tax assessor-collectors and 17 regional service centers. It covers getting and renewing a license, registration renewal after the end of safety inspections, titles and sales tax, every fee, and the 2026 state holidays, with topic guides and a page for every office on the Texas offices list. The TxDMV answers at 1 (888) 368-4689; DPS license renewals run by phone at 1-866-357-3639 (1-866-DL RENEW).

How these guides are written

Each page is written from the official pages of one state, read on a named day, with the official page linked where each fact appears. Fees, hours, addresses and rules are the agency's own; where two official pages give different figures, the page says so. Nothing is copied from other guide sites, and no page is published where the official sources give too little to say.

Questions about the DMV guides

Which states are covered?

California, read from the California DMV's own pages, and Texas, read from the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. More states follow; each one is built the same way, from the state's official pages, with the page each fact came from linked where it appears.

Are these the official DMV sites?

No. SearchSystems.net is a public records directory, online since 1997, and these guides explain what the official agencies publish. Every official link goes to dmv.ca.gov, dps.texas.gov or txdmv.gov. SearchSystems does not sell appointments, take payments or handle any DMV transaction.

How current are the pages?

Every page names the day its sources were read, and a weekly job reads the official pages again, rewrites the office pages whose facts changed, and holds any guide whose source changed for a rewrite by hand. The California pages were read on October 14, 2026; the Texas pages the same day.
