About this guide

Green Lake County, Wisconsin, has about 19,000 residents (2024 Census Bureau estimate), and arrests there are reported to the FBI by the Green Lake County Sheriff's Office and four city agencies. An arrest leaves the same records whoever makes it: the arresting agency's report, the record of anyone held at the county jail, and, if the District Attorney files charges, a case in the Green Lake County Circuit Court. This guide says who keeps each one, what it costs and who may see it, with the arrest counts each agency reported.

This guide covers who makes arrests, how many arrests, booking and the jail, finding an arrest, copies, cities and common questions.

Who Makes Arrests in Green Lake County

The Green Lake County Sheriff's Office is the county agency that reports arrests to the FBI for Green Lake County. It reported 347 arrests for 2025.

Arrests inside four of the county's cities are reported to the FBI by an agency of the city's own, listed here with the Census population and what each reported:

  • Berlin, 5,607 residents: 210 arrests reported for 2025.
  • Markesan, 1,385 residents: 38 arrests reported for 2023.
  • Princeton, 1,270 residents: 26 arrests reported for 2022.
  • Green Lake, 1,043 residents: 61 arrests reported for 2025.

A city on that list is reported separately whether the officers are the city's own or the sheriff's under contract; the FBI's list does not say which.

Booking: Where People Arrested in Green Lake County Are Held

A person kept in custody after an arrest in Green Lake County is held at the county jail, whichever agency made the arrest, apart from the short stay some city departments' own holding cells allow; a person cited and released at the scene is not booked at all. The jail's record of each person held, with the charges, is a public record of the arrest, and the court file takes over from there.

On an average day in 2025 the jail held about 51 people, down from about 67 in 2019. Its rated capacity in 2025 was 108 beds, and it ran at 47 percent of it that year. The figures are from the Vera Institute of Justice's Incarceration Trends data.

How to Find Out About an Arrest in Green Lake County

Whether someone was arrested in Green Lake County, and what came of it, shows up in two places: the case index of the Green Lake County Circuit Court, which shows whether charges were filed and the next court date (the court records page SearchSystems verified is at greenlakecountywi.gov/resource_department/circuit-court); the District Attorney, which decides whether an arrest becomes a charge (its page is at greenlakecountywi.gov/departments/district-attorney, phone 920-294-4142).

That record shows what agencies reported to the state, which is wider than one county's court index but can lag it.
