Who does what in Mississippi

Mississippi splits the work between two state agencies and the counties. The Department of Public Safety's Driver Service Bureau issues driver licenses, permits and identification cards and gives the knowledge and eye exams at the driver license stations on its locations page, by appointment at dps.ms.gov/appointment, with renewals through the state's online renewal. The Department of Revenue issues the titles from Clinton and writes the rules on its motor vehicle pages, while the county tax collectors register the vehicles, sell the tags and collect the privilege, ad valorem and sales taxes, as the DOR's registration page sets out.

Start with the Mississippi office list for a station or a tax collector, the registration guide for the tag, the ad valorem tax guide for the value based part of the bill, the Fast Track guide for a title in 72 hours, and the new resident guide after a move.

Mississippi licenses, permits and ID cards

The Driver Service Bureau's fee schedule, read October 22, 2026, prices a four year Class R license at $24 and an eight year license at $47, original or renewal, a light commercial Class D at $29 or $57, an identification card at $17 for four years or $33 for eight, a learner's permit at $7 for two years, a duplicate license or ID at $11 and a late renewal at $1 more; a motorcycle permit is $1 and the endorsement $5, a CDL permit $16 and a five year CDL $55, and reinstatement runs $100 for a license and $175 after a DUI or drug offense, all paid in cash, debit or credit, never by personal check.

The DSB's Class R page sets the licensing age at 16, holds a 16 year old to twelve months on the permit, lets anyone 17 or older take the permit and the license the same day, requires no road test for a regular license at this time and excuses a new resident with a valid license from the knowledge exam; the state's driver manual gives that new resident sixty days. A license renews within six months of expiry under the DSB's renewal page, online every other time while not expired more than twelve months, with the two residence proofs and the identity papers on its required documents page. The license guide, the permit guide, the ID card guide and the fee guide set each of those out.

Vehicle titles, registration and the county tag

A Mississippi title costs $9 on the Department of Revenue's title page, read October 22, 2026, for a motor vehicle, a manufactured home, an electronic title or an electronic lien title, and a replacement is $9 on form 78-006; a standard title is issued within six weeks, an electronic title in three to four weeks, and a Fast Track title at $39 within 72 hours of reaching the DOR under its Fast Track procedure, by mail to the Fast Track box or by hand at the Title Bureau in Clinton.

The tag is bought from the county tax collector, and the DOR's motor vehicle questions page prices the registration fee at $14 for a first registration and $12.75 for a renewal, on top of the privilege tax, the ad valorem tax and the 5 percent sales tax on a purchase; a vehicle registered late after a move pays a $250 penalty, a lost or stolen plate is replaced for $10 with a $2.50 decal, a personalized plate adds $33 to $53, and a disabled veteran's plate is $1.

A new resident has 30 days to register under the DOR's registration page and a buyer 30 business days, in the county where the vehicle is parked overnight, and the DOR's ad valorem page assesses the vehicle at 30 percent of its retail price less ten years of depreciation, with the legislative tag credit the DOR sets each year taken off the bill. The title guide, the registration guide, the ad valorem tax guide and the renewal guide set out the paperwork.

Offices, hours and holidays

The DSB's locations page and the DOR's list of local officials, read October 22, 2026, carry 115 offices: 33 driver license stations in three districts, every one on the same Monday to Friday week from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with one contact number per district, and 82 county tax collectors, each with its own telephone and no published hours, so 33 of the 115 have a week published, 82 a telephone and 0 Saturday hours.

The DSB recommends an appointment at every station and the DOR publishes none for the tax collectors; a license renews online every other time and a tag online in 45 counties. Every office is on the Mississippi office list with what its agency publishes.

Public records beside the Mississippi DMV

The Mississippi DMV holds licenses and titles, not court cases, arrests or deeds; those are public records kept by other offices, and SearchSystems covers them for the whole state: looking up a Mississippi court case, the Mississippi arrest records guide, deeds and property in Mississippi, Mississippi people searches, running a background check in Mississippi and what the Mississippi records law opens, all from the Mississippi public records index.

Court cases, jail bookings and deeds are kept county by county. The largest in Mississippi: Harrison, Hinds, DeSoto, Rankin, Jackson, Madison, Lee and Forrest.
