Who does what in Indiana

Indiana keeps driver licenses, ID cards, titles and registrations under one agency, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, so there is no county tax office or clerk to go through for a plate. The BMV works through three channels: 116 branches in 108 cities, the myBMV online account, and BMV Connect kiosks, 64 of them inside branches and 11 standing in other buildings.

Two things sit outside the BMV's own counters. An emissions test is required before registration in Lake and Porter counties only, through the vehicle emissions testing program the BMV describes, and the Lake and Porter emissions guide covers it. Excise tax is collected with the registration, with county and municipal wheel taxes where a county has adopted them, which the excise and wheel tax guide sets out.

Start with the branch list if the transaction needs a counter, and with the guides below if it does not.

What you can finish without a branch visit

The BMV's Connect page, read October 21, 2026, lists what a kiosk does on its own: a new vehicle registration, a vehicle or watercraft registration renewal, a replacement sticker, a duplicate registration card, off road vehicle and snowmobile registrations, a driver license renewal or duplicate, an ID card renewal or replacement, a replacement commercial driver license or learner permit, surrendering a driving credential for an ID card, an email or mailing address update, printing an official driver record, paying a reinstatement fee, ordering a duplicate title. A kiosk inside a branch takes cash and cards; one elsewhere takes cards only, and all of them go offline on Sunday from 5:00 am to 10:00 am Eastern.

What still needs a branch is the work where a document has to be checked in person: an original REAL ID, which the BMV's REAL ID overview ties to a branch visit, a legal name or residential address change, a knowledge exam, a title transfer and a new registration. The BMV's branch visit page lists the counter transactions in full, and that list is on the branch page.

Which route to take for a given job is the subject of the branches, kiosks and myBMV guide.

Driver licenses and ID cards

Indiana prices an ordinary driver license by the driver's age. The BMV's fee chart revised January 1, 2026, read October 21, 2026, lists $17.50 under age 75, $11 from 75 to 84 and $7 at 85 or older, and its driver license fee page ties each band to a different validity period. A late renewal adds a $6 administrative penalty.

A learner's permit is $9, an amendment or replacement of a license, permit or ID is $9, and a state identification card is $9, with a free ID for someone who qualifies under the voting rule. On the commercial side the chart lists $17 for a commercial learner's permit, $35 for a CDL and $19 to add or remove an endorsement.

The card itself is mailed after the visit. Optional express credential service adds $25 to move it to the front of production and shipping. The fees are gathered in the Indiana BMV fee guide, and the documents a first license or a REAL ID needs are in the REAL ID guide.

Vehicle registration, titles and plates

A title in Indiana is $15, whether original, duplicate or replacement, and a speed title is $25 on top; applying for a title late carries a $30 administrative penalty. Registration starts from the class on the fee chart: $21.35 for a passenger vehicle, $26.35 for a motorcycle, $29.35 for a recreational vehicle and $30.35 for the listed truck categories, with trailers and heavy trucks priced by declared weight.

Three charges sit on top of the registration. The chart lists a $15 Transportation Infrastructure Improvement Fee, a $242 supplemental fee for an electric vehicle and $81 for a hybrid, which the BMV's vehicle fee page explains with its exemptions. Then comes the annual excise tax, worked from the vehicle's original retail price and age on the BMV's excise tax page, plus any county or municipal wheel tax.

Paying by card adds $0.40 plus 2.06 percent in every channel, per the BMV's payment page. Replacement plates, stickers and registration cards are $9.50 each. The registration guide, the title guide and the plate guide take each of those apart.

Branches, hours and holidays

The BMV's branch list, read October 21, 2026, carries 116 branches in 108 cities, 64 with a Connect kiosk inside. Indianapolis has the most with 6. Every branch answers on the BMV Contact Center number, 888-692-6841.

Hours follow a pattern most states do not have: 74 of the 116 branches are closed on Monday, 51 open on Saturday morning, 9:00 am to 12:30 pm, and 51 stay open to 6:30 pm on Tuesday. A knowledge exam has to start at least an hour before closing, and a driving test is booked 48 hours to three weeks ahead.

The BMV publishes its holiday schedule for both 2026 and 2027, with two election days among the closures and a rule that a Monday holiday closes every branch from the Saturday before. The dates and the full list of branches are on the Indiana BMV branch page.
