About this guide

Marshall County, West Virginia, has about 29,000 residents (2024 Census Bureau estimate), and arrests there are reported to the FBI by the Marshall County Sheriff's Office, five city agencies and four campus, state or other agencies. An arrest leaves the same records whoever makes it: the arresting agency's report, the record of anyone held at the regional jail, and, if the Prosecuting Attorney files charges, a case in the Marshall County Circuit Court. This guide says who keeps each one, what it costs and who may see it, with the arrest counts each agency reported.

This guide covers who makes arrests, how many arrests, booking and the jail, finding an arrest, copies, cities and common questions.

Who Makes Arrests in Marshall County

The Marshall County Sheriff's Office is the county agency that reports arrests to the FBI for Marshall County. It reported 27 arrests for 2025.

Arrests inside five of the county's cities are reported to the FBI by an agency of the city's own, listed here with the Census population and what each reported:

  • Moundsville, 7,703 residents: 393 arrests reported for 2025.
  • McMechen, 1,604 residents: 0 arrests reported for 2024.
  • Glen Dale, 1,413 residents: 65 arrests reported for 2025.
  • Benwood, 1,204 residents.
  • Cameron, 818 residents: 0 arrests reported for 2025.

A city on that list is reported separately whether the officers are the city's own or the sheriff's under contract; the FBI's list does not say which.

The Wheeling Police Department is listed by the FBI across two counties including Marshall County, so its arrests are not broken out for Marshall County here.

The FBI's agency list also places these agencies in Marshall County: Marshall County Drug Task Force (other); the Moundsville State Police (state police); the Department of Natural Resources in Marshall County and the State Fire Marshal in Marshall County (state agency).

How Many Arrests Each Agency Reports in Marshall County

The FBI publishes every agency's monthly arrest counts on the Crime Data Explorer. These are the full-year totals, all offenses, as the FBI held them on October 8, 2026; a year with months missing or not reported is left out.

  • Moundsville: 393 for 2025, 432 for 2024, 295 for 2022, 428 for 2021 and 368 for 2020; 2023 is missing months.
  • Glen Dale: 65 for 2025, 118 for 2024, 66 for 2023 and 89 for 2021; 2022 is missing months.
  • Marshall County Sheriff's Office: 27 for 2025, 25 for 2024, 46 for 2023, 51 for 2022, 79 for 2021 and 74 for 2020.
  • Cameron: 0 for 2025 and 0 for 2023; 2024 is missing months.
  • McMechen: 0 for 2024.

Together, the four agencies with all twelve months of 2025 on file reported 485 arrests that year. The three of them with both 2025 and 2024 complete reported 485 in 2025 against 575 in 2024, down 16 percent.

Through March 2026, the three agencies with every month so far on file reported 15 arrests, against 28 in the same months of 2025.

McMechen and Benwood reported only part of 2025 (2 months and 2 months) and are left out of the totals.

Booking: Where People Arrested in Marshall County Are Held

West Virginia closed its county jails in favor of regional jails run by the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation, so a person held after an arrest in Marshall County goes to the regional jail that serves Marshall County, and the state's inmate search covers all of them.

On an average day in 2024 the jail held about 72 people, down from about 73 in 2019. Its rated capacity in 2023, the last year with a capacity figure, was 63 beds, and it ran at 111 percent of it that year. The figures are from the Vera Institute of Justice's Incarceration Trends data.

SearchSystems opened and checked the custody page of the Marshall County Sheriff's Office at sheriffmarshallcounty.org/current-inmate-roster (page title: Private Site), which answered when SearchSystems opened it on October 9, 2026.

That page is the place to look for someone who was booked recently; a person cited and released at the scene, or held only a few hours by a city department, will not be on it.

A sentence of more than a year is served in state prison; the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation lists its inmates at dcr.wv.gov/offendersearch/Pages/default.aspx.

How to Find Out About an Arrest in Marshall County

An arrest in Marshall County can be traced in three places, depending on where the case stands: the custody page of the Marshall County Sheriff's Office described above, for anyone booked into the county jail; the case index of the Marshall County Circuit Court, which shows whether charges were filed and the next court date (the court records page SearchSystems verified is at courtswv.gov/public-resources/court-information-county/marshall_county, phone 304-221-2697); the Prosecuting Attorney, which decides whether an arrest becomes a charge (its page is at marshallcountywv.gov/agencies/prosecutors-office, phone (304) 845-3580).

West Virginia does not let the public search another person's statewide criminal history. The record kept by the West Virginia State Police goes to the person it belongs to and to employers and agencies the law authorizes; for everyone else the court's own case index is the public record of an arrest that led to a charge.

Getting a Copy of an Arrest Record in Marshall County

The report of an arrest is released by the agency that made it; the jail and the court hold their own records of the same event, but not the report. Under the West Virginia Freedom of Information Act the agency must answer within 5 business days, and it may charge the actual cost of copying.

  • An arrest by the Marshall County Sheriff's Office: ask its records unit.

  • An arrest by Marshall County Drug Task Force, the Moundsville State Police or the Department of Natural Resources in Marshall County: the records office of the agency involved.
  • A defendant who has been charged gets the report through the case: the Prosecuting Attorney, (304) 845-3580, handles discovery for pending cases.
  • The court file of a case that was filed: the Marshall County Circuit Court, through the court records page at courtswv.gov, phone 304-221-2697.
  • Your own statewide record: a fingerprint-based request to the State Police Criminal Identification Bureau.

The other Marshall County guides go further: warrants, inmate search, criminal records, court records, police reports, traffic tickets, DUI and divorce records.
