About this guide

Washington County, New York, has about 60,000 residents (2024 Census Bureau estimate), and arrests there are reported to the FBI by the Washington County Sheriff's Office and five city agencies. An arrest leaves the same records whoever makes it: the arresting agency's report, the record of anyone held at the county jail, and, if the District Attorney files charges, a case in the Washington County Supreme and County Courts. This guide says who keeps each one, what it costs and who may see it, with the arrest counts each agency reported.

This guide covers who makes arrests, how many arrests, booking and the jail, finding an arrest, copies, cities and common questions.

Who Makes Arrests in Washington County

The Washington County Sheriff's Office is the county agency that reports arrests to the FBI for Washington County. It reported 595 arrests for 2024, its latest complete year.

Arrests inside five of the county's cities are reported to the FBI by an agency of the city's own, listed here with the Census population and what each reported:

  • Hudson Falls, 7,359 residents: 335 arrests reported for 2025.
  • Whitehall, 2,482 residents: 95 arrests reported for 2023.
  • Granville, 2,420 residents: 31 arrests reported for 2025.
  • Cambridge, 1,801 residents: 36 arrests reported for 2025.
  • Greenwich, 1,669 residents: 3 arrests reported for 2025.

A city on that list is reported separately whether the officers are the city's own or the sheriff's under contract; the FBI's list does not say which.

How Many Arrests Each Agency Reports in Washington County

The FBI publishes every agency's monthly arrest counts on the Crime Data Explorer. These are the full-year totals, all offenses, as the FBI held them on October 8, 2026; a year with months missing or not reported is left out.

  • Hudson Falls: 335 for 2025, 293 for 2024, 229 for 2023, 272 for 2020 and 571 for 2019; 2021 and 2022 are missing months.
  • Cambridge: 36 for 2025, 30 for 2024, 20 for 2023, 20 for 2022, 121 for 2020 and 119 for 2019; 2021 is missing months.
  • Granville: 31 for 2025, 58 for 2024, 41 for 2023, 36 for 2022, 64 for 2020 and 69 for 2019; 2021 is missing months.
  • Greenwich: 3 for 2025, 12 for 2024, 10 for 2023, 3 for 2022, 37 for 2020 and 59 for 2019; 2021 is missing months.
  • Washington County Sheriff's Office: 595 for 2024, 414 for 2023 and 277 for 2022.
  • Whitehall: 95 for 2023.

Together, the four agencies with all twelve months of 2025 on file reported 405 arrests that year. The same agencies with both 2025 and 2024 complete reported 405 in 2025 against 393 in 2024, up 3.1 percent.

Washington County Sheriff's Office reported only part of 2025 (9 months) and is left out of the totals.

Booking: Where People Arrested in Washington County Are Held

The county jail is where a person arrested in Washington County and kept in custody ends up, whichever agency made the arrest, though a city department may hold someone in its own cells first and a person cited and released at the scene is never booked. The jail's record of each person held, with the charges, is a public record of the arrest, and once the person is released or sentenced the record continues in the court file.

So far in 2026 the jail has held about 69 people on an average day, up from about 68 in 2019. Its rated capacity in 2019, the last year with a capacity figure, was 183 beds, and it ran at 37 percent of it that year. The figures are from the Vera Institute of Justice's Incarceration Trends data.

SearchSystems opened and checked the custody page of the Washington County Sheriff's Office at news.washeriff.net/divisions/bookings (page title: Bookings | WCSO), which answered when SearchSystems opened it on October 4, 2026.

That page is the place to look for someone who was booked recently; a person cited and released at the scene, or held only a few hours by a city department, will not be on it.

A person sentenced to prison serves the sentence in a facility of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, whose inmate locator is at nysdoccslookup.doccs.ny.gov.

How to Find Out About an Arrest in Washington County

An arrest in Washington County can be traced in three places, depending on where the case stands: the custody page of the Washington County Sheriff's Office described above, for anyone booked into the county jail; eCourts, the Unified Court System's free online case search (WebCivil, WebCrims and WebFamily), which shows whether charges were filed; the District Attorney, which decides whether an arrest becomes a charge (its page is at washingtoncountyny.gov/Directory/Home/DepartmentListing?DID=30, phone 518-746-2525).

New York is one of the states that lets anyone look up another person's statewide criminal history: the Office of Court Administration sells a statewide search of criminal court records by name and date of birth, for $95 a search, through the New York State Office of Court Administration. That record shows what agencies reported to the state, which is wider than one county's court index but can lag it.

Getting a Copy of an Arrest Record in Washington County

An arrest report belongs to the agency whose officer wrote it, and that agency releases it, not the court or the jail. Under the Freedom of Information Law the agency must answer within 5 business days, at least with an acknowledgment and a date for the full answer, and it may charge copying at 25 cents a page.

  • An arrest by the Washington County Sheriff's Office: ask its records unit.
  • An arrest in Hudson Falls, Whitehall, Granville, Cambridge or Greenwich: the records unit of the agency that reports for that city.
  • A defendant who has been charged gets the report through the case: the District Attorney, 518-746-2525, handles discovery for pending cases.
  • Any county record that is not posted: the county records request page SearchSystems verified is at washingtoncountyny.gov/475/Record-Request (page title: Record Request | Washington County, NY).
  • Your own statewide record: a fingerprint-based Record Review through the Division of Criminal Justice Services.

Cities in Washington County: Who Reports the Arrests

The FBI lists a separate arrest reporting agency for five of the eight cities in Washington County: Hudson Falls, Whitehall, Granville, Cambridge and Greenwich. Fort Edward, Fort Ann and Argyle have no separate reporting agency in the FBI's list.

Wherever in the county the arrest happens, a person kept in custody goes to the county jail and the case goes to the Washington County Supreme and County Courts.
