How to Search Missing Persons (Start Here)
Missing persons databases are maintained by law enforcement at multiple levels. Public-facing tools include NamUs, NCMEC (for children), and state clearinghouses.
What this page covers: NamUs, NCMEC, FBI missing persons resources, and multi-agency databases. What it does not cover: The NCIC missing persons file (law enforcement only).
Where to start: For missing adults and unidentified remains, start with NamUs. For missing children, start with NCMEC at missingkids.org.
Common mistake: NCIC is not publicly accessible. NamUs is the public-facing equivalent.
