The U.S. Census Bureau conducts a national population count every 10 years. Individual-level census records are sealed for 72 years. The most recent publicly available census is 1950, released in 2022.
What this page covers: Historical census records for genealogy (1790-1950), Census Bureau demographic data, and American Community Survey data. What it does not cover: Current census responses (sealed for 72 years).
Where to start: For genealogy, search historical census records through FamilySearch.org (free) or Ancestry.com. For current demographics, use data.census.gov.
Common mistake: You cannot access individual responses from the 2020 or 2010 Census. The 1960 Census will not be publicly available until 2032.
