Federal campaign finance records are maintained by the Federal Election Commission (FEC). This covers contributions to candidates for President, Senate, and House.
What this page covers: FEC individual contribution searches, candidate filings, PAC spending, and independent expenditure disclosures. What it does not cover: State and local campaign finance (filed with each state's election agency).
Where to start: To look up who donated to a federal candidate, use the FEC Individual Contributions search. OpenSecrets.org provides additional analysis of FEC data.
Common mistake: The FEC only covers federal elections. State and local campaign contributions are filed separately with each state.
