About this guide

New York Mobile ID puts a DMV-issued identity credential in an optional smartphone app. It works through electronic verification at participating locations, while your physical license, permit or non-driver ID remains part of what you need to carry.

What New York Mobile ID actually does

New York calls its digital credential Mobile ID, abbreviated MiD. The official Mobile ID overview describes a secure digital version of a state-issued driver license, learner permit or non-driver ID. Enrollment is voluntary and free. A person does not need to become a driver to use MiD if they already hold an eligible New York non-driver identification card.

MiD helps prove identity or age where an organization has chosen to accept it and has a compatible way to verify it. It is not a new driver-license class, a driving test waiver, a renewal service or an additional authorization to operate a vehicle. A permit remains a permit, with its existing restrictions, after enrollment. Start with the physical credential you already hold and decide whether an additional way to present it will be useful.

Prepare the current physical card and phone

The DMV enrollment instructions for credential holders require a compatible smartphone and a valid New York license, permit or non-driver ID. Use the most recently issued physical card. If it is missing or too damaged to scan, receive a replacement before enrolling.

The basic setup is to download the official app, register the phone number, photograph the front and back of the card, take the requested selfie and wait for verification against DMV records. Follow the current phone and security requirements on that page. Complete enrollment when you can take clear pictures and deal with any verification question, rather than discovering an unfinished setup at a checkpoint or counter.

Use New York State's mobile-app directory or the links on DMV's own MiD page to reach the official download. Similar wording in an app-store result does not establish that an app is the New York credential. Read the product name and follow the state-provided link before supplying photographs of your identification.

Keep the physical credential when driving

New York's Mobile ID memorandum to enforcement agencies and magistrates says that holders should possess their physical credential as required by law, including when driving. Agencies may accept MiD under their procedures, accept only a physical document, or request the card if electronic verification cannot be completed.

That distinction matters during a traffic stop. A mobile credential's existence does not require every officer to have a reader or accept it. Keep the physical card accessible with the documents needed for driving. A screenshot, a picture of the plastic license and an electronically authenticated MiD are different things. The memorandum specifically explains that looking at the phone screen alone does not authenticate the digital credential.

Present MiD through the verifier's process

New York's official Mobile ID launch explanation describes the exchange: the holder approves the requested information and shares it through a secure digital connection. You do not need to hand the phone to the person checking identity. The process is intended to give the verifier information it can authenticate, rather than a visual substitute for inspecting a card.

At a participating location, open the app and follow the sharing prompts. Read the data request before approving it. An age check may need less information than a transaction that verifies a full identity. If the request seems unrelated to the transaction, ask the employee what they need. Keep control of the phone and allow the verification process to finish before putting it away.

Acceptance depends on the location

The DMV guide for MiD verifiers explains why an ordinary visual check or a scanner designed only for a physical card's barcode is insufficient. Businesses need compatible verification tools. They can choose an appropriate app or integrate compatible verification into their existing systems.

For the customer, this means that a shop can accept a New York plastic license without accepting MiD. Ask about MiD acceptance before relying on it for a time-sensitive transaction. Seeing a barcode scanner beside the cash register is not enough. If the business does not use the required process, present the physical credential the business accepts instead of asking an employee to approve a screen image.

Alcohol age checks and participating airports

The State Liquor Authority's MiD guidance announcement confirms that New York liquor-license holders may use MiD for age verification. Acceptance remains optional. A restaurant or bar needs to implement verification and train staff; the state announcement does not make every licensed premises a participating location.

Ask before starting a purchase, and follow the employee's supported verification method. The digital credential does not change the legal purchase age or the establishment's responsibilities. This is especially useful to understand when one location in a chain has adopted MiD but another has not.

For air travel, the state's explanation of expanded airport acceptance identifies participating security checkpoints as a use of MiD. Acceptance can depend on the airport, terminal and checkpoint equipment. Check the current airport guidance reached through DMV's MiD page before traveling. A historical list of participating airports is not a promise that every checkpoint on an itinerary will support the same process.

Understand privacy and device security

The state's explanation of MiD sharing and device protection describes consent for each information-sharing request. It also explains that the credential uses its own unlocking protection, such as Face ID, Touch ID or a PIN. Opening a phone does not itself remove the app's identity protection.

MiD is designed so it cannot be used to track where you present it. This does not mean every business you deal with has identical recordkeeping practices for the underlying purchase or service. Read the information request and understand what transaction you are completing. Separate the credential's operation from information you independently provide on a store account, application or booking.

Move MiD to a replacement phone

MiD can be active on only one device at a time. Enrolling it on a new phone deactivates it on the previous device. The state's device-protection explanation also describes invalidation of the old MiD after enrollment on a replacement device if the original phone was lost or stolen.

Before trading in a working phone, make sure you still have the current physical card and access to the information required for enrollment. Treat the phone change as an identity setup task, not merely a photo transfer. If a technical problem prevents completion, DMV's credential-holder page directs users to the program vendor's support options. Keep using the physical credential while resolving the app problem.

Keep the underlying DMV record current

Use the regular driver-license renewal process when the license approaches expiration. Enrolling in MiD does not renew it or satisfy the renewal vision requirement. A digital display also does not restore a suspended driving privilege. When driving status is the issue, use DMV's status-check service to identify the actual record and any required action.

For a missing physical card, the replacement instructions explain eligible online, mail and office routes. An ordinary license or permit replacement costs $17.50, with a specific police-document procedure for an eligible crime-related loss. Receiving a duplicate does not extend the expiration date.

Report permanent address changes using DMV's address-change service instructions. Correct a legal name, birth date or other record error through the photo-document amendment process. MiD receives information from DMV; editing an unrelated phone contact or account does not amend the state driving record.

Distinguish Mobile ID from MyDMV and paper documents

MyDMV provides access to records and eligible transactions. MiD is the credential used for supported identity checks. Having one does not mean that a transaction in the other has been completed. Keep renewal receipts and other transaction confirmations with your records instead of using the app's presence as proof of payment or processing.

Similarly, a downloadable temporary DMV document serves a different purpose while a replacement or renewed card is being produced. Use the document and instructions issued for that transaction. If the permanent card is delayed, check its mailing status; attempting MiD enrollment repeatedly will not locate a missing delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Is New York Mobile ID required?
No. Enrollment is optional and the app is free. New York continues to issue physical licenses, learner permits and non-driver ID cards.

Can I leave my physical license at home when I drive?
Continue carrying it. New York's enforcement guidance says MiD holders should possess the physical credential when driving, and an officer may require it.

Is a photograph of my license the same as MiD?
No. MiD must be electronically authenticated through a compatible verification process. Showing a picture or screenshot does not complete that process.

Does every New York bar or airport accept MiD?
No. Businesses choose whether to accept it, and airport use depends on participating checkpoints. Check acceptance before relying on a mobile credential for a particular visit.

Can I put MiD on two phones?
It can be active on only one device at a time. Enrolling on a new device deactivates the credential on the old one.

Does enrolling in MiD renew an expired driver license?
No. Renewal, replacement, record corrections and restoration of driving privileges remain separate DMV transactions. Complete the relevant transaction for the underlying credential.
