Who does what in New Jersey

New Jersey keeps every driver and vehicle transaction under the Motor Vehicle Commission, which runs its own facilities and splits them by job: licensing centers for licenses, permits, ID cards and REAL ID, vehicle centers for titles, registrations and plates, road test sites, six regional service centers for suspensions and records, and the state inspection stations. There is no county office in the chain.

Most counter work is by appointment through the MVC's appointment system, and renewals, replacements and address changes are done on njmvc.gov. Start with the facility list when a counter is needed, the agencies guide to tell the kinds apart, and the online services guide for what needs no visit.

Driver licenses, permits and REAL ID

The MVC's license fee schedule, read October 21, 2026, lists the standard automobile license at $24 for issuance or renewal, and its REAL ID questions put a REAL ID license or ID at $35. A duplicate or a qualifying change is $11, an automobile learner or examination permit $10, a motorcycle only license $24 and the combined auto and motorcycle credential $42; a CDL is $42 plus $2 an endorsement after a $125 examination test receipt.

A first license, permit or ID, a transfer and a knowledge test need an appointment at a licensing center, and the MVC's renewal instructions allow a renewal appointment from three months before expiration. The driver license guide, the REAL ID guide, the graduated license guide and the fee guide take those apart.

Vehicle registration, titles and plates

The MVC's initial registration instructions list a standard title at $60, $85 for a financed vehicle with one lien and $110 with two. Registration follows the fee schedule by vehicle age and weight: for the common passenger categories $46.50 or $59 a year under 3,500 pounds and $71.50 or $84 over it, with a $7 reduction for eligible owners 65 and older and persons with disabilities, and a pleasure motorcycle at $65.

An electric vehicle pays the add-on the MVC set at $250 from July 1, 2024 and raises $10 a year, $270 for the year from July 1, 2026. The registration guide, the title guide, the plate guide and the inspection guide set out the paperwork, all of it by appointment at a vehicle center or online.

Offices, hours and holidays

The MVC's facility locations page, read October 21, 2026, carries 107 facilities in five kinds, each with the statewide week the MVC gives its kind: licensing and vehicle centers Monday to Friday 8 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday 8 am to 3 pm, road test sites and regional service centers weekdays only. The MVC publishes no telephone number and no hours for any single facility.

Most transactions are by appointment through the MVC's appointment system; the thirteen 2026 legal holidays close every facility. The New Jersey MVC facility list links every one.

Public records beside the New Jersey MVC

The New Jersey MVC holds licenses and titles, not court cases, arrests or deeds; those are public records kept by other offices, and SearchSystems covers them for the whole state: the New Jersey court records guide, New Jersey arrest records, New Jersey property records, finding a person in New Jersey, New Jersey background checks and the New Jersey public records law, all from the New Jersey public records index.

Court cases, jail bookings and deeds are kept county by county. The largest in New Jersey: Bergen, Middlesex, Essex, Hudson, Ocean, Monmouth, Union and Camden.
