About this guide

New Haven County is a county in Connecticut, and arrests there are made by the state police or the town police, with eight city agencies reporting to the FBI. An arrest leaves the same records whoever makes it: the arresting agency's report, the record of anyone held at a facility of the Connecticut Department of Correction, and, if the State's Attorney files charges, a case in the Connecticut Superior Court. This guide says who keeps each one, what it costs and who may see it, with the arrest counts each agency reported.

This guide covers who makes arrests, how many arrests, booking and the jail, finding an arrest, copies, cities and common questions.

Who Makes Arrests in New Haven County

Connecticut has no county sheriff with a patrol role. Arrests in New Haven County are made by the state police or the town police, and in Connecticut the police for a given address is the town police in a town with its own department and the state police elsewhere.

Arrests inside eight of the county's cities are reported to the FBI by an agency of the city's own, listed here with the Census population and what each reported:

  • New Haven, 137,562 residents: 5,974 arrests reported for 2025.
  • Waterbury, 115,908 residents: 5,508 arrests reported for 2025.
  • Meriden, 60,849 residents: 1,265 arrests reported for 2025.
  • West Haven, 55,379 residents: 919 arrests reported for 2024.
  • Milford, 53,396 residents: 907 arrests reported for 2025.
  • Naugatuck, 32,116 residents: 815 arrests reported for 2025.
  • Ansonia, 19,195 residents: 835 arrests reported for 2025.
  • Derby, 12,915 residents: 466 arrests reported for 2025.

A city on that list is reported separately whether the officers are the city's own or the sheriff's under contract; the FBI's list does not say which.
