Who does what in Colorado

Colorado splits the work by the kind of record. The Division of Motor Vehicles, part of the Department of Revenue, issues driver licenses, permits and ID cards and gives the tests at its own state driver license offices, listed on its driver license office page; a visit there is booked on the DMV's appointment scheduler. Titles, registration, plates and disability placards belong to the county Clerk and Recorder motor vehicle offices in the DMV's county directory, each county setting its own hours, appointment rules and payment methods.

Between the two sits myDMV, the state portal that renews a license or a registration, replaces year tabs, orders a driving record and routes supported vehicle transactions to the county for processing; its help center says what the portal takes. The specialized state transactions, the IRP account for a motor carrier among them, run through the state units on the DMV's state services list, and boats and off-highway vehicles are Colorado Parks and Wildlife's.

Begin with the driver license guide or the registration guide for a first transaction, the county clerk guide for which office an errand belongs to, the new resident guide after a move, and the online services guide for what myDMV finishes without a visit.

Driver licenses, permits and ID cards

The DMV's state fee schedule, read October 21, 2026, carries the amounts set by its June 30 and July 1, 2026 fee adjustment: a regular license renewal at $34, an instruction permit at $20, a duplicate at $12.30 and a later duplicate at $16.40, a commercial license at $35 and a commercial permit at $20, with a $2 motorcycle endorsement, an $11.50 written retest and a $15.40 skills retest. The Standard license and ID program, for residents who are temporarily lawfully present or undocumented, has its own schedule: $36 for the license, $23 for the permit and $14 for the ID card.

A REAL ID follows the DMV's REAL ID page and the required document page, and a first visit starts with the DMV's pre-registration before the appointment. A new resident has 30 days from establishing residence to transfer a license under the DMV's Welcome to Colorado page, which counts residence from a business, a job or 90 consecutive days in the state. Reinstatement after a suspension carries the $95 fee on the DMV's reinstatement page, with $25 more after a DUI. The REAL ID guide, the test guide, the reinstatement guide and the fee guide cover each of those.

Vehicle titles, registration and the ownership tax

A Colorado registration bill is mostly tax. The DMV's taxes and fees page puts the specific ownership tax, the registration fees by weight and age and the surcharges together, and the General Assembly's ownership tax publication explains the tax as a yearly charge on the vehicle's original taxable value, falling with its age to a minimum. The title charges on the fee page are small, $8.20 for a duplicate title and $7.20 for a lien release or transfer title; the optional Keep Colorado Wild pass adds $29 at registration unless declined.

The DMV's registration page gives a buyer 60 days after a purchase and a new resident 90 days, with a one month grace period at renewal and a late fee of $25 for each month or part of one after that. A vehicle coming from another state needs the VIN verification the DMV describes, and one kept in an emissions program area the test on its emissions page. The title guide, the ownership tax guide, the new resident guide and the Keep Colorado Wild guide carry the paperwork.

Driver license offices, county offices and appointments

SearchSystems has no page for the individual Colorado offices yet, because dmv.colorado.gov could not be read for its office list from the server that builds these pages; the DMV's own driver license office page is where to find a state office, with its hours and the services it gives, and its locations, closures and delays page carries the day's wait times and closures.

A driver license, permit or ID visit at a state office is booked on the DMV's appointment scheduler after the pre-registration; the scheduler books state offices only, and a county motor vehicle office sets its own appointment, walk-in and drop-off rules, found through the DMV's county directory.

Titles, registration, plates and placards are the county Clerk and Recorder's; the county clerk guide says which errands a county counter takes, which go to the state units on the DMV's state services list, and which myDMV finishes without a visit, a registration renewal and replacement tabs among them.

Public records beside the Colorado DMV

The Colorado DMV holds licenses and titles, not court cases, arrests or deeds; those are public records kept by other offices, and SearchSystems covers them for the whole state: the Colorado court records guide, Colorado arrest records, Colorado property records, finding a person in Colorado, running a background check in Colorado and the Colorado public records law, all from the Colorado public records index.

Court cases, jail bookings and deeds are kept county by county. The largest in Colorado: El Paso, Denver, Arapahoe, Jefferson, Adams, Douglas, Larimer and Weld.
