The Montana Department of Corrections runs the Correctional Offender Network Search, which it describes as a search for the records of convicted felons in the state; it takes a Department of Corrections ID number, the easiest route, or a full name, which also searches known aliases, or a first or last name with physical description attributes, every field optional, and returns at most 100 results before asking for a narrower search. Its disclaimer calls the search a convenience for the public, warrants nothing as to accuracy, timeliness or completeness, and says that anything found is to be verified by written correspondence to the department's Public Information Officer at 5 South Last Chance Gulch, Helena, MT 59620 before being treated as fact; the department's main line is 406-444-3930 and its email corpio@mt.gov.
The search's glossary explains the status a result shows. An active offender is anyone the department supervises, in a prison, prerelease center, treatment center, sanction center or the community; an inmate is someone at Montana State Prison, the Women's Prison, a regional prison or a county jail awaiting transfer, whether sentenced to prison by a district court, returned by the Board of Pardons and Parole or the court after a revocation, or committed to the department and placed in prison; prerelease means one of the nonprofit centers where people work in the community and return each night; alternative secure means a sanction, treatment or assessment facility instead of prison; parole, probation, the intensive supervision program, a ten day furlough release to find work before discharge, an escapee or absconder from parole or probation wanted by the department, in custody awaiting disposition after an arrest or revocation, interstate compact for a Montana sentence served elsewhere, and conditional discharge from supervision under section 46-23-1020 complete the list. A person held by a county on local charges is the sheriff's record, found through the Montana county pages.

The facilities: four of the state's, three under contract and the prerelease centers
The secure facilities page lists four: Montana State Prison at 400 Conley Lake Road, Deer Lodge, (406) 415-6126, nearly 1,600 men in a 68 acre compound at every security level; Montana Women's Prison at 701 South 27th Street, Billings, (406) 247-5100, about 240 women; Pine Hills Correctional Facility at 4 North Haynes Avenue, Miles City, (406) 232-1377, the state's long term facility for adjudicated youth of 10 to 17, which took girls for the first time in 2025 and runs as a school; and Riverside at 2 Riverside Road, Boulder, (406) 225-4500, a 50 bed sub unit of the women's prison.
Because the prisons are over capacity, the contracted facilities page places about 1,500 inmates elsewhere: about 750 at the CoreCivic Crossroads Correctional Center in Shelby, about 140 at the Dawson County Correctional Facility, a regional prison in Glendive, and about 600 at the CoreCivic Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility in Tutwiler, Mississippi, chosen by custody level, distance from parole eligibility and treatment in progress, still under Montana supervision, with the same six cent calls and 25 cent messages, the same approved visitor list, and legal calls arranged at (662) 345-6567; questions about Tallahatchie go to the Secure Contract Facilities Bureau at (406) 415-6518.
Prerelease centers, six month programs where people live in and work out on an approved schedule, run under contract at Alpha House and Passages in Billings, Butte, Bozeman, Great Falls, Helena and Missoula, with the department's own Flathead Valley Reentry Center in Kalispell, under the Community Corrections Facilities and Programs Bureau at (406) 444-9647.
Mail: the Maryland box, the three book vendors and legal mail
The mail page sends personal mail for the four state facilities to an off site scanner: the full facility name and state, the inmate's full first and last name and AO number, PO Box 247, Phoenix, MD 21131, with the sender's full name and address in the top left corner, delivered to the inmate's tablet under policy 3.3.6 on inmate mail in secure facilities; a juvenile at Pine Hills is addressed by initials and youth ID number. Personal mail that arrives at a facility is returned, and each mailroom answers by email, CORMSPMailroom@mt.gov for the State Prison among them.
Books and publications come only from Hamilton Books, Harper Collins or Penguin Random House, ordered by an approved visitor and shipped to the facility, the State Prison at 700 Conley Lake Road, Deer Lodge, MT 59722 and the women's prison, Pine Hills and Riverside all through 701 South 27th Street, Billings, MT 59101, marked Attn: Mail Room Staff with the name and AO number. Legal mail is not scanned: marked as legal mail under the same policy, it goes to the facility and is opened by staff in the inmate's presence, as the attorney contact page explains.
At Crossroads, Dawson County and Tallahatchie personal mail is scanned on site, addressed to the facility, 50 Crossroads Drive, Shelby, MT 59474, 440 Colorado Boulevard, Glendive, MT 59330, or 19351 U.S. Highway 49 North, Tutwiler, MS 38963 with the housing location.
Money: approved senders, OKTA and the 20 day money order
The financial transactions page limits deposits to family members, one non family member and the inmate's attorney, all of whom must first be approved through the visitation application, which may take up to 90 days; while it is pending, one friend or family member may send a single $100 money order or cashier's check, and personal checks are never accepted. Once approved, a sender deposits online through the state's OKTA account system, the same login used for the visitation application, or mails a money order bought from the U.S.
Postal Service and received at the prison within 20 days of purchase, made out to the inmate with the inmate number, in an envelope showing the sender's full name and address in the top left corner and Attn: Mailroom Staff with the inmate's full name, DOC number and address, postmarked from the area of the approved sender's listed residence and containing nothing but the money order, or it is returned; money orders for the State Prison go to 700 Conley Lake Road, Deer Lodge, and for the women's prison, Pine Hills and Riverside to 701 South 27th Street, Billings, with Crossroads and Dawson County taking theirs directly and Tallahatchie under its own instructions. Questions about online deposits go through the contact inmate trust account form.
Calls, tablets and the weekly free visit
The staying connected page gives the rates: wall phones in every unit, used only by the inmate, at six cents a minute including collect calls; tablets for calling, messaging and video through two accounts the family creates, GettingOut at 1-866-516-0115 and ICSolutions at 888-506-8407, with text messages at 25 cents a minute or message, video messages at 35 cents a minute, photo attachments at 25 cents and video visitation at 25 cents a minute; every inmate gets one free call and one free video visit a week.
Everything but attorney contact is monitored and recorded, phones and tablets go dark for hours or days at a time for security, and a violation by either side can cost the privilege. Attorneys reach clients confidentially on tablets or unit phones under policy 3.3.7 and by legal visits on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. requested 24 hours ahead through the warden's office, (406) 415-6519 or cormspvisitingattorneys@mt.gov at the State Prison.
The constituent services manager, Renee Seiller-McDaniel, takes family questions at (406) 444-1680 or CORConstituentInfo@mt.gov with the inmate's name, DOC number and facility, without replacing the grievance and medical request processes inside.
Visiting: the application, 90 days and the schedules
The visitation page starts with an OKTA account in the applicant's full legal name, then the online application with a Social Security number, a driver's license or state ID number and a copy of a government ID, and for a minor proof of legal authority and the consent of the person who holds it; the decision comes by email, the inmate is told too, the review may take up to 90 days, an appeal runs from the link in the email, and an approval carries over if the inmate moves to Crossroads, Dawson County or Tallahatchie.
At Montana State Prison visits are scheduled online, one a week per inmate, with up to five visitors on the high side and three on the low side, whose schedule rotates every four weeks between mornings and afternoons, SAU D Block on Fridays by call to (406) 415-6313 with two weeks' notice. At the Women's Prison every visit has been scheduled online since August 1, 2025, on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., with the third Saturday of each month reserved for Kids' Day and visitors arriving 30 minutes early for check in.
Pine Hills visits are booked 24 hours ahead at (406) 232-1377, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends to 7 p.m.; Riverside visits are scheduled online for Saturdays and Sundays from 12:20 to 2:20 and 2:45 to 4:45 p.m. with a 15 minute early arrival. The offender visiting policy, the dress code and the visiting rules apply at every facility, and paper applications come from corpio@mt.gov.
Parole: one fourth of the sentence and ten working days
The Board of Pardons and Parole's parole guide sets the parole eligibility date by statute at one fourth of the sentence less jail credit for non life sentences, calculated by the prison records office; two months before it the records office notifies the Board, the facility runs a pre parole school, the inmate files a parole application and may waive the first hearing for up to six months. A three member panel hears the case informally, records it, reviews the record, hears witnesses for and against, hears the inmate's plan, and announces its disposition orally and in writing within 21 days, with a parole order reciting conditions, including restitution where the sentence ordered it and a no contact condition when a victim asks.
Anyone who wishes to speak must notify Board staff at least ten working days before the hearing and state the relationship to the offender; under the statement rules in person statements at the facilities are suspended, so statements go by phone, in person at the Deer Lodge board room by video or in writing to CORBOPP@mt.gov, 1002 Hollenbeck Road, Deer Lodge, MT 59722 or fax 406-846-3512, with the witness list at 406-846-1404.
The department's Victim Services helpline is (406) 444-0447 or (888) 223-6332, answered within 48 hours on business days.
Reading a Montana result
A result is a felony record under the department with a status from the glossary, inmate, prerelease, parole, probation or absconder, verified only by writing to the Public Information Officer; a county jail inmate without a felony sentence is not there. The letter goes to Maryland, the money order to the facility from an approved sender within 20 days of purchase, the call costs six cents a minute, and the visit waits on an application of up to 90 days and then the facility's own online schedule.
