The Maine Department of Corrections offers the Adult Resident and Adult Community Corrections Client Search, a free service open 24 hours a day with data updated daily. An adult resident is an adult incarcerated at a department facility, and for the search that includes adult residents under the department's jurisdiction housed elsewhere, in county jails, other states and federal facilities; an adult community corrections client is an adult the department supervises in the community on probation, supervised release for sex offenders, supervised community confinement or parole. Juveniles are not in the search. The department adds three notes: the information is not a complete criminal history, which comes from the state's Public Criminal History Request service; law enforcement officers should take no action on it alone without consulting the department; and the earliest custody release date shown is the release date calculated with detention time credit and all possible good time the resident could earn, on the assumption that every deduction is awarded and none lost.
The department's information page for adult residents draws the line at the jails. Someone recently arrested is the record of the jail in the county where the offense occurred, and someone a court ordered detained or sentenced to a jail is the record of the jail in the county of the court; the department does not operate the jails, and the Maine county pages list them. For a person sentenced to a department facility, the search page is the first stop, and the department cannot give anything beyond it unless the resident has signed a release of information form, and even then some information stays confidential under federal and state law.
- Search: the Adult Resident search, free and updated daily, with the Corrections Webdesk for questions about a record and (207) 621-2600 for technical help.
- Release date: the earliest custody release date on the page assumes all good time is earned and kept; for the actual date the department says to ask the resident, who has the most current information, and the department reports each resident's current release date at least quarterly.
- Money: the Money Deposit Service with a Visa or MasterCard, up to $100 a day to the general trust account and $100 to the phone account, $200 a week per account, available in about three business days, with the MDOC number and date of birth.
- Mail: first class mail for every adult facility goes to a Cushing Road address in Warren with the resident's name and MDOC number, while packages, newspapers, magazines and legal mail go to the facility's own address, as the facilities page lists them.

The facilities and their two addresses
The facilities page gives each adult facility two mailing addresses, one for first class mail other than legal mail and one for packages, newspapers and magazines and legal mail, each headed with the resident's name and MDOC number. For the Maine State Prison and the Bolduc Correctional Facility both addresses are in Warren, 807 Cushing Road and 516 Cushing Road. For the others the first class address is in Warren and the package and legal address is at the facility: the Mountain View Correctional Facility at 809 Cushing Road, Warren, for letters and 1182 Dover Road, Charleston, for the rest; the Maine Correctional Center at 813 Cushing Road, Warren, and 17 Mallison Falls Road, Windham; the Downeast Correctional Facility at 811 Cushing Road, Warren, and 64 Base Road, Machiasport; and the Southern Maine Women's Reentry Center and the Women's Center, both at 813 Cushing Road, Warren, for letters and in care of the Maine Correctional Center at 17 Mallison Falls Road, Windham, for packages and legal mail.
The juvenile facility is the Long Creek Youth Development Center at 675 Westbrook Street, South Portland, (207) 822-2617, and the community corrections offices are listed on their own page.
The deposit service and its limits
The Money Deposit Service, run with InforME, puts money into the general trust account and the phone account of an eligible resident by credit or debit card. To prevent misuse the department caps deposits at $100 a day to the trust account and $100 a day to the phone account, with a maximum of $200 a week per account, and no single email address may make more than one $100 deposit of each kind a day; a deposit to both accounts goes in a single transaction.
Funds are non refundable and reach the resident about three business days after the transaction. The depositor needs the resident's MDOC number and date of birth and a card with a Visa or MasterCard logo, since prepaid cards are not accepted; the MDOC number, the identification number assigned to every adult prisoner and juvenile resident, can be confirmed at 207-287-2711 or through the Corrections Webdesk, and only the resident can say what the account holds. Technical help is at 207-621-2600.
How a release date is calculated
Policy 11.5, Calculation of Adult Resident Sentences and Release Date, effective February 1, 2002 and last revised August 21, 2023, makes classification staff responsible for recording and calculating sentences and for the timely release of adult residents, and states the department's policy that every reasonable effort be made to let residents earn the maximum deductions the statutes allow. Staff review the judgment and commitment documents and any revocation documents for the length of each sentence and the total, the detention time credits to deduct first, which Code governs each sentence, with separate procedures for 1983, 1995 and 2004 Code residents, the Resident Performance Reports that earn deductions for programs and conduct, the disciplinary documents that withdraw them and the documents that restore them, then calculate the release date and cross check the CORIS computer calculation by hand.
They report monthly on residents projected for release within 120 days and give each resident a report of the current release date at least quarterly, and sentences for crimes before October 1, 1983 are worked out with the Attorney General's office. Boarders and safekeepers, people a jail cannot hold who are transferred to the department, have their own procedure.
Appeals and what staff will answer
Discipline, custody level, transfers between department facilities, transfers with another state, the earning of good time, furloughs, work release and supervised community confinement can each be appealed by the resident, and the department asks families to allow the appeal process to finish before contacting staff, who will not answer questions about an appealable matter while it is pending. Once a release has been signed and the appeal is complete, inquiries go to corrections.classification@maine.gov, except that questions about discipline go to the facility, and the department points to its policies on discipline, classification, transfers, sentence calculation, furloughs, the community transition program and supervised community confinement for the timelines.
Victim notification and the information line
The Victim Services office answers at (800) 968-6909 or (207) 287-4385 with sentencing information, the anticipated date of release, the place of confinement and restitution status. The victim notification law applies to victims of murder and of Class A, B or C crimes, and of Class D crimes under chapters 9, 11 and 12, and a victim who wants notice must file a request with the prosecuting attorney's office, kept confidential, or submit the department's online form addressed to the Director of Victim Services at State House Station 111, Augusta, Maine 04333-0111, giving the prisoner's name, the court and docket number and the county of the prosecuting attorney; the notice comes before work release, furlough, release or discharge and before any conditional release such as probation, parole, overnight release, supervised community confinement or similar programs.
The office also helps when someone in custody or under supervision engages in a course of conduct meant to harass, torment or threaten another person.
Reading a Maine result
A search result says whether a person is an adult resident, which can mean a county jail, another state or a federal prison holding the person for Maine, or a community client on probation, supervised release, community confinement or parole, and gives an earliest custody release date that will hold only if every deduction is earned. Beyond that page the department speaks only with a signed release, and the resident is the best source for the real date.
