In 1998 voters approved a bond referendum of up to $12.7 million to build a new Justice Center, which included renovation of the former courthouse now called the Administration building. The Justice Center includes the courtrooms, County Attorney's offices, Clerk of Court, and Judge's offices on the courthouse side. Story County Sheriff's Office Current Inmate Roster - The Sheriff's Office maintains an online inmate roster that provides information about individuals currently in custody.

This office serves as a repository for many public records, including land transactions which document title to property. We work with the Iowa Department of Public Health to provide certified copies of births that occurred in Story County, marriage certificates for license applications submitted in Story County, and death certificates from anywhere in Iowa.

The Office of Recorder was created by the First Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Iowa in 1839. In 1860, the law provided that "each organized county shall elect a judge of the county court, a prosecuting attorney, a clerk of the district, a recorder, a sheriff, a surveyor, a coroner and a supervisor of roads." It also provided that the recorder shall be treasurer of the county. The law required the recorder to "keep books for entering deeds" and a deed was not to be considered lawfully recorded unless previously acknowledged (notarized) or proved as provided by law.

The Recorder's Office serves as the primary repository for documents establishing property ownership, including deeds, mortgages, liens, easements, and other instruments affecting real estate title.
