- Courts: The Maine Supreme Judicial Court sits at the top of the system; trial-court business is handled by the Superior Court (16 counties) and District Court. Most courts publish dockets and case lookups online.
- Criminal history: Official background checks run through the Maine State Police - State Bureau of Identification (SBI); the Maine criminal records page covers the current fee and request process.
- Vital records: Birth, death, marriage, and divorce certificates are issued by the Maine CDC's Vital Records office and may also be available locally.

Maine still does a surprising amount on paper. The judiciary's electronic filing rollout is recent and partial, so many court record requests still go through clerk's offices by phone or mail — our page notes which courts have online case search. The State Bureau of Identification runs a public name-based criminal history search returning Maine convictions and pending matters. Birth, death, and marriage certificates come from the state vital records office or the town where the event occurred — Maine's 400-plus municipal clerks remain the local registrars.
